Roland JC 40

Post by Doug Taylor »

Anyone use a Roland JC 40 to play pedal steel?

I borrowed one to play at a hymn sing at church this afternoon and I really thought it sounded good.

I am considering buying one and wondered if anyone else is using this amp.

It's my main clean amp for 6 string electric guitar I might have to actually try my steel through it...
Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright. Give praise to the Lord with the harp, chant unto Him with the ten-stringed psaltery. Sing unto Him a new song, chant well unto Him with jubilation. For the word of the Lord is true, and all His works are in faithfulness. The Lord loveth mercy and judgement; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

It took some tweaking of the eq but in the end a really pleasing clean sound in a 33 pound easy load in! I thought the reverb was really good as well.

I started with everything at 12 and it was way too bright for my tastes.

I've loved that amp since I bought it. My favorite clean tones ever on standard guitar are those 80s chorused cleans and pretty much everyone used a JC-120 for them.

I guess Roland didn't have enough room for a real spring reverb like the 120 in the 40 so they put a really good digital model instead.

I don't think I've ever used the bright switch on mine but I regularly play it with a guitar that has active pickups so it's quite bright to begin with.

Definitely gonna have to try my steel through it now.

I tried it I like it but I'll have to play with the EQ a bit but it sounded pretty good like this.

That is exactly the same settings I used except I had the mid at 3 instead of 4! I just used it a bunch tonight, I can't believe how sweet this little amp sounds!

JC 40 has been my go-to gig amp for 10 years. I love the thing.
