What Strings are You Using for E9th and C6th?

Post by Don Mogle »

Hello Everyone,

I have been using D'Addario NYXL 1238 strings on my E9th neck. These were good for awhile, but the most recent set I put on my Emmons PP don't seem to be as good or long-lasting as some of the first ones I tried. Has the quality decreased on these strings?

Question: What E9th strings are you all using now? I would like to keep a set that uses the 12 gauge 3rd string. I've also. heard some good things about StringJoy strings but have not tried them.

Thanks in Advance,

Don

I've been using Live Steel Strings for many years. You can customize the sets for different gauges. When you are in the final stage of ordering, there is a comment box where you can ask for gauge substitutions. I will never switch brands, unless they go out of business. I've tried the NYXL strings, and don't find them worth the extra cost.
Carter D10 8p/7k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup, Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112, Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open G slide
and regular G tuning guitar) .
Playing for 55 years and still counting.

Hi Don,
Interesting ... I have been using the NYXL's for a while, but the last set I've installed seems to be below par, too. (For now it only 'seems' ...)

Symptom: The 3rd string 'rattles' (like a sitar) when it gets old. My new string is rattling, too. (Bad set? Bad setup? I don't know ...)

I like the NYXL's because they do not sound as mellow as the nickel plated strings, but not as sharp as the stainless steel strings. Buying them at "Strings & Beyond", the cost is less. (Juststrings seems to have stopped carrying NYXL's. Why, is unkown.) ....... Pat

Curt Mangan Jerry Roller Series nickel. I never break a 3rd at 11.5. Curt winds his own strings in Cortez CO. If you have any questions or issues you can call him up and talk to him.

E9 - I was using Lloyd Green's signature set from Jagwire but now I'm using the NYXL pack, the blue one and a single .022 wound for the 6th string.
Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright. Give praise to the Lord with the harp, chant unto Him with the ten-stringed psaltery. Sing unto Him a new song, chant well unto Him with jubilation. For the word of the Lord is true, and all His works are in faithfulness. The Lord loveth mercy and judgement; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

Been using the NYXL's on both necks for half dozen years or so and really like them. They seem to last forEVER ... I was also happy with Jagwires, till they were hard to get for awhile, and liked the LiveSteel Cryogenics for the 2-3 years I used them, just not quite as happy as with NYXL's.

I don't think there really are BAD strings these days. Somebody needs to do blind tests on all of them and see if we could distinguish between them.

Pat,

Try a drop of sewing machine oil on the roller (where the string goes into the roller slot), wipe off any excess, and see if that solves the issue.

Hi Don,
Oiling the roller helped and is not as noticable/does not happen as often, thanks. ......Pat
