Everything in your chain
Everything in your chain can make a difference, good or bad. With my N400 and my SS a black box and compressor is needed to harden the sound. With my TT 15 cab and 202 they are not to my benefit as the sound is pretty tight already. I talk about the “chain” a lot to other Steelers trying to broaden their awareness. Cables are a big deal, those radio shack $1.298 cables will not do the job, etc, etc, etc. Do not be afraid to experiment, Buddy never stopped looking and experimenting and neither should you.

Re: Everything in your chain
I agree on the cables and willing to experiment. I'm constantly trying to improve my tone, never satisfied with a single amp alone. I do believe in minimal gear if it works for me.
