Emmons undercarriage tuner

Post by Gavin Dunn »

I’ve got an old Emmons push pull that I’m working on which is missing the undercarriage tuner on the C pedal F# change. I’ve looked at PSG parts and out West, but neither have that part in their catalogues. I’ve yet to contact Emmons Resound, and was wondering if anyone knows of another source.
Thanks for any info, Gavin

Gavin, The half-tuner you speak of is used on the F lever.
The C pedal F# note is tuned at the headstock, and the open E at the changer. :)

Ah, right. I might be thinking of the C pedal B to C# change. Is there supposed to be one on there?

Lol, ok. I’m way off here then. I thought that it was necessary in order to get the same B to C# pull on the A and C pedals. I’ll have to look deeper into it.

You just need to adjust the lock collar on the pull rod so the C pedal B->C# raise pulls the finger all the way forward, just like the A pedal. Some shock spring is necessary to match the timing with the longer E-> F# raise, which should have no spring.

Thanks Nick, I’m getting the mechanism figured out, just sorting out what components are missing, such as the springs and adjustable E-F collar.
It’s a very used guitar that’s been modified, so a bit of a confusing first assessment.

Gavin,

I'd highly recommend Clem Schmitz's bargain-priced booklet "Methodology And Practice In Pedal Steel Guitar" to any Emmons push-pull owner...
The 24-page booklet shows how to make simple adjustments to an Emmons push-pull or even take the entire guitar apart and put it back together...
He sells the booklet and a DVD combo package on eBay listed as "Pedal Steel Guitar 83 METHODOLOGY P/P Book & 2008 2 DVD's Package" for just $21!
https://www.ebay.com/itm/274497649883?h ... XQMmJROe-R
If Clem's material is no longer on eBay, try contacting him at freedomsauce(at)comcast(dot)net (replace the "at" with "@", and "dot" with ".")
Clem is a very helpful guy; I've heard that if you are really stuck, he will guide you through the fix via Skype for a very nominal fee.

Hey Dave, I did see that, though I did get a lot out of the Ron Lashley write up about push-pulls. I’ve got 2 guitars that I’m essentially just documenting what they are, their condition, and to get them playing well enough to move them for someone else that acquired them through a passing in the family.
