A Challenge to Erv and all you tab writers

Post by John A. Russell »

Hey all

I was in Nashville Late 2000s and was given a copy of a track on CD.

The Nashville guys were skeptical that the performance was real.

I made it my mission to find the steeler and with the help of the Forum, I found the identity of the steeler.

In 2010 I met the steeler at the Dallas convention.
He brought his steel and amp to my room and played the piece in front of David Hartley and I.

The piece "The Lord's Prayer" the Steeler "Mike McGee"
You can hear him acknowledging us at the start of the video.

I have started to tab this wonderful picking and am throwing out the challenge for others to do a complete tab of it.

Kind regards.

Mike McGee

Post by George Duncan Sypert »

I know Mike McGee and have known him quite a few years now. Saw him in Dallas this past March for the first time in a while. Mike is a great pedal steel player, a wonderful person. I am proud to call him friend. I have no idea how he played that song but it is wonderful.

If you get a chance to hear him play wherever it might be by all means do so.

Thanks John for posting this video.

John, thank you dear friend for your kind words! I wish you success in your efforts to tab this one. I used the sheet music from an old Baptist Hymnal as a starting point. I "may" have added a "few" passing tones here and there...

George, thank you also for your kind words! I very much enjoyed our phone conversation earlier today. Stay in touch and call me any time, dear friend.

Mike's Version

Erv

Have you tabbed Mike McGee's performance, as per my post?

Have a listen to it, very, very different!

Let me know if you have.

That's extraordinary. How is he doing those legato scale runs without moving the bar? The chord work and suspensions are just amazing too. I wouldn't know where to start tabbing something like that. Do you know his copedent?

I have started the tab and got someway through, but asked if any pro tabbers had done it, to save me hours of work.

I will carry on at my own pace and will eventually get there.

Wow. Thank you Mike, and hats off to you for such an incredible arrangement and performance.

That looks like quite a personal setup that you could only arrive at through many years of thinking about the possibilities!

Regarding "many years", only 53

I am 71 and determined to minimize equipment weight, so I am ALL IN for my dear friend Johnny Cox's single 12 string D13th tuning. I have a new GFI 12 string (because of the kindness and dedication of GFI owner Bob Diekmeier) that I am devoting all my remaining time to, and it remains to be seen if this old dog can be taught a new trick or two!
