Hi all. for years I have played my national resonator sitting. I am curious about the ins and outs of standing while playing. First, how long of a strap is needed and what is a good affordable strap ( in case I do not like standing). Do you play standing? Can you tell me anything that I should know?

I used a Webb dobro strap for years and now use a Poff strap. There are plenty of other options though. I prefer to play while standing, as I can move around as the music moves me, and I can interact better with other standing players.

My only suggestion is to get a strap designed for square neck playing and NOT a standard guitar strap, which tend to be too flimsy from a stability standpoint.

I prefer to play my overhand acoustics standing up, and lap steels as well. I've tried and tried to play with various straps, and it just doesn't work for me. Before Mark retired and sold the Deluxe34 operation to the Ashers, I had him fabricate several custom brackets to fit my Dobro, Tricone, & Weiss. And also a couple custom double-brackets for installing two lap steels on one Deluxe34. I'm glad that I did, since custom Deluxe34 brackets are apparently not in the cards for the new Asher stands.

thanks for the replies. The Webb straps look like some of the others I have seen. I like the Webb selection. Not sure if I want to invest 50 to 70 dollars in a strap and not like playing standing.

Webbs are a great balance between features and cost...they have nice leather (get the 3" model) , the quick disconnect at headstock, and a cute little safety loop at endpin.
And if you don't like it, you can just re-sell it here on the forum...(and the very next day you'll get a chance at a gig that you have to play standing, haha!)

I can see how a wide belt, such as the 3 inch, would be more comfortable. I am used to my strat and three inch nylon strap.
My National does not have a strap peg at the neck, so there must be opinions on where to hook up. My reso has a slotted headstock. The strap I would need should accommodate that.

I have one of these an like it a lot on my National.
Easy to put on & take off. And pretty cheap.
Put it on with the strap coming up between strings 3 & 4.

Eric. that is what I am looking for; something affordable to try out. if I like standing, then I probably will find myself needing the higher end straps.
