Who manufactured my Volume Pedal?

Post by William Springer »

I've been using the attached pedal for a couple of years. But I don't know who made it. Can't find any markings on it. Maybe it is a DIY pedal.

Any ideas on who the manufacturer is? Curious minds wanna know ...

It has a clear plexiglass front on it. Did Goodrich make a model like that?

I googled Dekley and can’t find one that looks like mine.

Can you photo yours and tell me what model do you have? Thanks in advance 😀

I've never seen a Goodrich anywhere close to that one. In all my years of playing, ghe only Goodrich pedals I have seen pretty much look the same as they do now. Maybe at one time they were like this. They first reminded me of Emmons or the Sho~Bud pedals that attach to a pedal bar, but I believe they both had open bottoms where you could see the pot. I've never seen one exactly like this one.

I Googled Dekley volume pedals and only found one style, and it looks nothing like this. It also says Dekley LowBoy imprinted on the top. Did they have an earlier/different model?

Thanks for responding, but I can't find a similar looking Goodrich or Dekley ... hmmm

This is interesting hunt guys, maybe someone will have the answer ...

Sorry guys,

Must be that my Dekley is set up right now. What I really meant to say that it is very similar to my ZB Custom pedal. I wouldn't be surprised if the same pedal was used for other brands?

The profile is a bit like the pedals sold by Beck Musical Instruments (BMI) many years ago.

As you can see (?), my pedal is "geared". Yours appears to be modified for a string drive.

Lee, makes sense since ZB and BMI are sort of related. It's been so long ago but I had another pedal that fit the profile; Edwards Light Beam? that one used to shock the heck out of me!

That ZB chassis surely either matches or is in the ballpark. Here's my BMI from 1983.

You know, they say black dog hair sounds the best, but I am partial to light brown dog hair.

The Zb chassis has a front plexiglass cover like mine … I think it’s the closest thing we have come up on.

Q: Was/Is private labeling of foot pedals common practice? i.e. did one manufacturer build a common chassis and change the nameplate/logo for different brands?

Here is another photo … Note: The pot is made in Mexico …

Thanks again guys. It’s been an interesting hunt … Curious minds, wanna know.

That's the classic AB (Allen Bradley) pot. Found in many/most old pedals and not a clue of much of anything.

I am not aware of anybody jobbing pedals for rebranding.

I lean toward that being a ZB that broke its nameplate which was replaced with a piece of plexi. The plastic nameplate on my BMI broke so that would not be at all surprising. Differences between your pedal and Tom's (major) would be explained easily enough as simple evolution. However I am not a ZB, Zane Beck, BMI historian by any stretch.

Yep. I guess. The so-called Myrick Mod? Truth is, as a beginner in 1983 I never found it to be particularly effective or interesting. I pretty quickly stopped messing with it...one less distraction.
Maybe I'll play with it later and see if it is more interesting now.

How do I tell if it's a taper pot ...

Note: the volume swell is pretty even all across the push down ...

Goodrich uses castings to build their VPs.
These pedals is made with Extrusions of aluminum channel. No master patterns to be made or casting required.

With the bottom about 3 X 1 1/2" and top maybe 4 X 1 1/2" aluminum channel. All needed would be some Cutting length and angle tapers, Mill the slot or slots for plug in's and controls, Drill holes for pivot hinge, Drill holes to install pot, string and spring,. Drill and tap holes for front plates. Then add top front plate of metal or plastic with name.

Wish I had seen one of those about 1970 when I built a volume pedal. All pedals I seen were cast.

Most of the ones I have seen too. The Fender Volume/Tone pedal I had was stamped sheet metal if my memory serves me correctly.

That pedal is about identical to a pedal that was factory supplied with a new MSA Classic I bought in the 70's.. Not sure MSA ever built pedals, and over the years I have seen several others that looked like mine, and not all were branded with a label.. The one that shipped with my MSA had no identification tag on it... It possible these pedals were supplied with new steels by a few builders back in the day, and were supplied to steel builders at a good price... bob

Ref: Wayne Brown: Out West Country …

Wayne indicated it was made by a Canadian company called Lincoln
And was modeled after a Goodrich
