500 series DI module ?

Post by Bob Hoffnar »

Anybody using a 500 series DI /mic pre for recording there steel ?

My current direct recording signal path is
Sarno V8> Neve 5012 > UA 1176.

Anybody having any luck with 500 series tube preamps ?

My Neve Portico is amazing but not quite right if I go straight into it.

Thanks, Bob

I've got a couple of the CAPI 312 API clone preamps, and I really like them for their warmth and detail, and they have a ton of gain for ribbons. They also sell this version with the DI that looks pretty cool, I'm considering trying one of these as well. It's pretty much pure analog (note the Discrete Opamp, also swappable, standard footprint), and it has a really nice option to swap out different DI modules, transformer, FET, etc. also sold as kits. Unfortunately, they are generally out of one of the transformers and waiting on more, and that seems to be the case at the moment, but I think I'm going to try one when they're back in stock. Seems like pretty flexible piece of gear.

If you're not into kits, there are usually some pre-assembled ones available on reverb.com. Here's the photo from their web page, you can see all the DI options.

Another one I've looked at (also a kit, also waiting on parts for availability)

I don't have any personal experience with the Lola pre, but I have one of their 500 series FET comp kits and it was really well documented and a fun build.

Cranborne Audio Camden 500 Series Microphone Preamp

Lookup this pre on the Vintage King Audio site....A friend of mine has a studio in Oregon, and he purchased 2 of these, and was floored at the sound for guitar, and other applications, especially for the price......Jim

I like it a lot! Very versatile, clean when you need it to be, with some colors available when you don't. I have two for stereo use and they seem to be very well matched.

Given the price, it's a pretty unreal deal in my view.

JIm,
I am now using the V8 into Neve 1176LB with the EQ module inserted into a Neve 2264ALB and am happy with the sound. The Portico didn't quite get it.

I haven't found anything that can replace the Sarno V8 in a 500 series module.
