Question about string separation
I have a Mullen D-10 and the string separation at the changer is 5/16" and at the roller nut 4/16". What is the string separation on 12 string pedal steels? Also, what is the ideal string separation for best tone?

I don't think there is any exact standard. Previous discussions (you could use the search function and find several threads) seem to indicate there's not any consistency - they are all close, but not exact. I recall someone saying Sierras were more closely-spaced than som others, but I could be wrong.
As far as tone goes, string separation is irrelevant....well, as long as they're not close enough to hit each other.

Wider string separation effects the magnetic signal somewhat, giving a more distinct tone with less blending together of the notes. Try comparing a six string lap steel to a 10 string, the tone differential is not only caused by the different impedance's, the picking is also more positive and solid with more space to play with !!
