I think there a bunch of different threads.
I can't say for sure since I'm comparing vintage to new (Fender...newer and older are different) to GFI (different from either Fender) but I recall a previous question on this and the statement regarding a standard thread is that there isn't one.
I would like to be dead wrong regarding modern steels - it'd be great if there WAS a standard.

The vast majority of modern pedal steel guitars (60's - present) use 1/2"-13 thread. It came about because that was the thread size microphone stands used. Steel guitar legs were made from cut down microphone stands.
I believe GFI uses 5/8"-?? (I think 5/8"-11). MCI used 7/16"-14. and older Mullen Guitars used to use a slightly larger thread.
Standards would be nice but someone always thinks they have a better mouse trap. Besides, there is no builders' board of standards to discuss and develop standards. We're kind of stuck with de facto standards.
