Keith Whitley's "I'm No Stranger to the Rain" is another great piano/steel guitar solo. Paul Franklin on steel

Jessi Colter "I Thought I Heard You Call My Name" is one great pairing of Piano and Steel.

Playing steel in tune with a piano presents a certain set of issues. These are my experiences and I am sure others may view it differently. If I am overdubbing, I really prefer to be the last instrument to go down so I can find the sweet spot for intonation. I have recorded with just a vocalist, a guitar and a bass, keying off the bass for my intonation and after pianos were added,, I wasn't happy with the result. Also an acoustic piano with its "stretch" tuning and an electric piano with its perfect thirds are different. I find if my starting point is 442, my job is easier. I suspect because of our history with non pedal steels with the considerably flat tuned thirds, we have become accustomed to this "sweetness". At 442 for me and 440 for the piano, our thirds become closer to accomodation and the ones and fives are forgiving enough. I'd like to hear how others approach this.

acoustic piano strech vs pedal steel

I always wondered how the acoustic piano was capable of working with other instruments.Maybe our ears are pretty forgiving.

I agree with Clyde - I infinitely prefer overdubbing if the piano part has already been done.

As for fiddles, well, I'd prefer to be in a different zip-code.
