Trace Elliot Elf

Post by Danny Letz »

Is anyone using a Trace Elliot Elf successfully? Would you mind posting your knob settings. I just got one and so far I'm having the same problem that I did with the GK MB 200. I just can't seem to get to where I want to be. I just started playing with it today, maybe I'll find it.

Yeah, I have one. It sure is small. I use it with a homemade preamp to dial in a fender scoop, and it sounds OK when I set the Elf eq flat. The thing is, the Elf is NOT flat with all the eq at 12 o'clock.
I have the Elf hanging off the side of my seat, and I could never tell where the controls were set, so I used (removeable) orange electrical tape as knob markers.
After measuring the Elf, I have two sets of markers:
the long triangles are where the white knob dots are, so straight up is 12 o'clock. The squares, if you put them straight up make the Elf flat.
You can see that with all knobs at 12 o'clock, the Elf cuts the bass, cuts the mid the most, and cuts the treble the least. So the first pic is everything at 12 o'clock, and the second picture is flat.
The manual says the tone controls are at 80Hz 400Hz an 4.2kHz.

Franklin D10 8&5, Excel D10 8&5. Both amazing guitars! Homemade buffer/overdrive with tone and adjustable 700Hz "Fender" scoop., Moyo pedal, GT-001 effects, 2x BAM200 for stereo or spare. BW1501 in closed back wedge. Also NV400 etc. etc...

Thanks Glenn, good info. Sounds like you are running yours as just a power amp. I have a Ganz power amp. You have to have a preamp plus effects. I was hoping for all that besides the effects in one unit. So far the MB 200 comes closer to my sound that the Elf. I carry it for emergencies & it’s good enough to get you out of a bind. I’ll keep trying with the Elf.

I carry one in my gig bag as a backup for my rack system. I have only had to use it once due to a problem with a power strip, but I did a 3 hour gig with it and a Wet Reverb stomp pedal. I don't remember the settings, but with only bass, mid, and treble, I was able to get an acceptable sound very quickly to finish the gig. I can't see it being a main amp for me, but it does sound good, not great. At 1.6 LB. and 5 x 7 x 1-1/2 inches and 200 watts, it's a keeper for me.

That’s the same situation I’m carrying the MB200 for. I also carry a Wet Reverb. I may A B the two amps & carry the better sounding of the pair as my spare. I really haven’t spent enough time with the Elf , I was just trying to get some advice on a starting place.

Danny,

What speaker are you using with the ELF, I've used a 12 inch Travis Toy, and a 15 Neo. start with treb mid and bass all at 12 o'clock and adjust from there.
