Graham,
I also do a half on my A pedal. You have to do that by ear. Come half way up on the A pedal to go from C# to C, all the way off to go from C to B. With a little practice you can get it sounding real good and really impress the other band members.

As a beginner I have recently started using this technique regularly and just love hitting those JI intervals abeit my batting average is low. This is now my favorite thing.I also do a half on my A pedal. You have to do that by ear. Come half way up on the A pedal to go from C# to C, all the way off to go from C to B.
I wonder, which means it's probably already been done, if the other pedals should be tuned to JI but have a rubber stop so that, with a little extra force, you could bring them into ET when necessary.

"Half-stops" are normally accomplished in one of 3 ways...
Using a half-pedal. Tricky, but it can be done well with much practice
Having a spring-stop arrangement, whereby another spring engages when the half-tone is reached
Setting another pull on the same pedal to start when the half-tone is reached

Hi Graham, if ever you venture South to my neck of the woods, pop in with your steel, and hopefully I may put a few pointers your way.
Take care and keep picking.
