LKV on PP guitar

Post by Andrew Waegel »

Hello,

I have a S10 Emmons PP with a LKV lever that does nothing. I want to do the typical B -> Bb change but I thought that with a push pull mechanism it wasn't possible to lower a raised string, which is how i'm used to playing this change (lowering strings 6-10 to C from C# engaging LKV with AB pedals down).

Other PP players, what do you do with LKV?

Thanks,
- Andrew

Yes, raises override lowers.

I lower string 5 to Bb on the LKV, but obviously this lever is redundant if the A or C pedal is pressed.

Bobbe Seymour has written that it is possible to engineer a way round this, I can't remember how, perhaps we'll hear from him.

Andrew,

I have been playing a PP for many years. I've raised my seventh string to G while also lowering my fifth string from B to Bb with the L knee vertical. Because the changer is raise-dominate, string five is not lowered with the pedals down, thus giving you an A7 chord. Also, as a side benifit, you get a handy D chord (suspended, if you raise string seven), using strings 6, 7 and 9 in the open position with pedals down. Try doing a hammer-on with your bar on string seven at the first fret to get the idea.

Ha~Ha! Here's my chance again. You distroy a vintage guitar by replacing the changer with an All-Pull¡¡¡¡ [Just kidding!]

Actually I've thought of ditching the PP a few times for a modern guitar with an all-pull changer but then when I fire up the old gal and that tone hits me, that warm clear crunch that blossoms in the ears like good bourbon on the tongue, i think ok, i'll keep her for a while more...

I recently got an 8x4 guitar as my main axe, to replace my 8x5 all-pull. I used the AB+LKV for the 4 minor chord as a crutch for years, just because it's easier to play it in tune that way. My suggestion? Practice learning to play the half-A-pedal in tune and use the change for something else, like Lynn suggested. It's a very versatile thing to have in your muscle memory, IMHO.

By all means add the B's to Bb. You will grow to love this change. It has several applications. Try it with your RKR-D# and D to C#.
