My QuadraVerb went south on me so while waiting for a replacement, I tried going straight into my Sessions 400 from my Matchbox. After a struggle in getting the right sound, I was surprized to find I (maybe) really don't need the QuadraVerb.

Is there anyone else that goes straight into a Sessions 400? What setings do you use?

I go straight from my guitar to a Goodrich L10K (It has the matchbox circuitry built-in) to my Session 400.

Reverb settings? Not much to change other than 'more or less'. I set it somewhere between 5 and 7, depending on the room.

When I was using my Session 400 a lot last year, it was steel to volume pedal to amp - that was it. I wasn't using delay at the time and I certainly didn't need any extra EQ.

Al Perkins has always played without reverb for as long as I've known him. And he always sounded great, just straight into an amp.

I've been known to go into a Goodrich 120 then straight into my LTD 400 (same basic chassis, different box as a Session 400) straight, just a very little reverb from the amp. The exact settings depend on the room and which steel I'm using. I start the treble and presence on 12 o'clock, midrange down with the shift set wherever I can remove the "woof" - typically 9 or 10 o'clock, but that's not exact - and bass at 12 o'clock, and then set everything to the room. Usually up a little on treble, down a little on bass, but it varies some from guitar to guitar, room to room. Of course, the speaker matters - it came with a Spider Black Widow, but there's a JBL K-130 in there now. For me, the big issue is removing the "woof" without removing the "tone". Image

He used to use distortion and some reverb back in the Burritos days. I swear there's also revrb on the Mannassas stuff, but that may have ben added in the studio.

I think the best amp I ever went straight into with no effects at all is the Fender Steel King, it just seems to sound so good without any effects, other than the reverb of the amp.

Matchbox 7A, Vol. pedal to a super twin head and fender speaker box provides Monster tone with my Carson Wells D-10
Echo is nice, but more for the player and muscians, I dont think most people listening hear or see beyond the girl at the end of the bar

Well, the good sound I got certainly caught me by surprise. I will probably try it for a while until I hear something somewhere that I don't like.

Thx

Because my axe-of-choice is an Emmons p/p, I choose to keep the sound as unaltered as possible:

Emmons into an Emmons volume pedal into an Evans SE-200 with the reverb somewhere between 0 and 3 depending on the situation. It don't get better'n dat! Image

Keep on pickin'!
