"They Asked About You"-Reba McEntire Live-Terry Crisp Break

Post by Jeff Garden »

***Complete UPDATE 4/4/25***
Terry Crisp is one of my favorite steel players. Seems like he's "under the radar" at times and doesn't get the recognition he deserves but check out his playing with Reba, Ricky Skaggs, Travis Tritt, Dolly Parton, Mark Chesnutt, and lots of other recordings over the years. This video of him playing with Reba on tour 30 years ago says it all. Here's one of my favorite Reba songs and Terry plays the perfect break at 2:11. Great touch, tone, sustain for days, and everything is a perfect match for backing up a fantastic singer. This is what pedal steel is all about and the look on Reba's face near the end of break says it all - she thinks he crushed it too!
I beat this to death trying to work out every note in the break for the tab - that's as good as it gets with my abilities! Corrections or slicker ways to play it are always welcome.
Here's "They Asked About You" on youtube. The song starts at 0:45 after Reba's chat with the crowd and Terry's break is at 2:11. Enjoy!

Thanks Jeff, super job!

If there was ever a question of how a Derby sounds, there you go. As good as any of them, played with the right hands.

Thank you for the nice comments guys. What a great gig that must have been for Terry Crisp to be on the road with Reba in her prime and playing huge crowds. You're right about that Derby, Dick, it steps right out doesn't it?

It sounds good on YouTube… but it sounded GREAT live, I am fortunate to have heard it live, an unforgettable moment. The only better one was hearing Buddy with Ray Price.

I originally looked at this great ride by Terry Crisp back in 2019. Just posted a full update as of 4/4/25. Enjoy!
