12 string Uni
Well,, I didn't think I would ever do it but I just stepped into the world of the 12 string uni's. Aqquired a really nice S/D 12 8/6 Fessy today. I found more and more stuff I wanted to play and was having a hard time with it on my single 10, so I'll probably be asking some dumb questions concerning this monster I just got.
Can't keep both steels, so my Emmons S/D 10 3/5 will be posted in the For sale section soon.
Ya'll wish me luck with this thang!! lol..

Congrats on the Fessy, Larry!
They are some very FINE steels indeed!
A lot lighter than a D-10 as well.
Plus you get the best of both worlds...now you can play Country...and Western!

Good luck my friend.

The S-12U set up is really easy to adjust to if your familiar with the D-10 set up, E9th/C6th. I play S-12u, D-10 & S-10's. I separate the E9th & B6th when the E's are lowered. I think there's a whole new set of things out there with using all of the pedals/kl'ers on both tunings but I hadn't explored that yet. Good luck.

The trickiest part is retraining the right thumb to the fact that the D string is no longer there, and readjusting your vision to know where the 8th string root is. I took a red marking pen and ran it along the 8th string for awhile. After a few weeks I didn't need that anymore. Just hang in there a little while, and you will get use to it. Then the possibilities become endless.

David,
I've allready found out what you're talking about on that 8th string, and my thumb! lol.. Really different, and it'll take some getting used to not having that D string, and using a lever for it. I can tell I'm gonna like it though!
Ya'll bear with me, I'm sure I'll have plenty of dumb questions. lol..
ps. Larry R. I could all ready get the country,,,,,and western [a little bit] lol..
Looking for some blues, and some old classic rock & roll now..

Got my U12 about 2 months ago. So far. it's been alot of work getting it setup right, but the dividends are paying off. I really like being able to play in and out of both tunings with just a KL change. David is right! The biggest difference is the loss of the 9th string D. String 8 is "HOME". Once you get the visual, there's only one grip psition to change. Yoy're really gonna like the U12!

I have the 9th string B to D on my LKL. It adds an interesting voicing when you pick the 9th string and then ease in the LKL then press pedal A with strings 6 & 5.Try this in blues vamp.
Also, try the same thing and then use only the B pedal along with your 7th string for a sus chord and then release the B pedal.

I never could get a grip on straight C6th, that's why I went to a single 10, I got so frustrated at Jeff N. I wanted to throw my bar thru the T.V. screen, when he's say, "C6th is alot easier than E9th, so lets just have fun with it"! LOL..
Now I'm not thinking two necks, and two tunings any more, just trying to look at one great big tuning I have access to. I'm sure hoping it works that way!! lol..

cna/t spell, how in the world am I gonna play steel??

This is so exciting! I just bought a Carter U12 three weeks ago from Mr. Billy Carr. I love it! Aside from the glories of the tone, the tuning makes all things possible. I just tried a classical piece that is two octaves and a fifth and I played it all on one fret, allowing for that shimmery, arpeggio sound.
I hope you'll share all your discoveries!

I play a Sho-Bud 12U. I started out with an Emmons S10 and wanted to get into a double neck, but found this at the time. I've had fun with mine, but I'm glad you'll be asking questions-now all of us 12 stringers will be able to share some notes. I do like being able to swing back and forth between tunings and I like the low E root on the E9th side. I like getting that low E growl grabbing chords on the bass strings.
