Solution for "loose" action??

Post by Jake L »

I have an older Zum which has a great sound. However, compared to the newer guitars that I played recently, it seems that my guitar is
really loud mechanically, and the travel and action of the pedals is not nearly as short or as easy. I am not a steel guitar tech, so I was wondering what could be done to make this guitar play more like a newer model?

It is surprising that the pedal travel is greater on the Zum, yet they are still hard to press.

This indicates that the helper springs are not set correctly.

If you are not a steel tech, don't mess with it.

Put some pictures up for us 'closet rocket scientists' to peruse, and we may be able to spot the problem.

You anywhere near Bobby Bowman? I have heard enough stories about his touch with the undersides of all kinds of steels (not to mention his touch on the topsides of them) to believe that he has an intuitive feel for adjusting a steel guitar. Although I do my own work (it's not rocket surgery), I would head straight for him if I got in too deep.

BB's the man! I used to hear "Pork Chop" say, "The best friend a song ever had, Conway Twitty". The best friend a steel guitar ever had would have to be ole BB!

I just sent Mr. Bowman an email. Hopefully he can find the time to work on it.
