Bigger guages on C6th

Post by Billy Wilson »

I put a .013 for a high G a .015 for E and .018 for C. I am really enjoying how this feels and sounds. Seems like a fatter string is an easier target to hit. Also fatter and louder sound. Does anyone else do this? If not, why not? I could not find any thing like this in any of the string guage charts. I haven't had any string breakage yet.

I've got 12-G, 14-E, 17-C on my Carter right now but I've always liked to experiment with heavier strings. What are the other gauges?

Are you pulling the G to a G#? You might find it could be 1 gauge too heavy, hmmmmm, just a thought.

Andy, All other guages are standard so far. I just switched the G, E and C up one guage to see if that might give me a little more stability. I haven't had out on a gig yet so I don't know how it will react out there.
Gene, I am raising the G to G# and so far not a problem.

I also like the heavier gauges. I'm from the old school and am partial to the full, rich tones. I also use the heavier gauges on a couple of stings on the E9th neck also. I like a .012 gauge for the 3rd string and a .022 plain for the 6th, nicket wound on the lower, of course.
