Harmonics on string 4

Post by Dan Beller-McKenna »

Hi all,

I have been working hard to improve my "chimes" technique, and I'm making good progress using the edge of my palm. But I am finding a huge drop off in tone and volume when I go to the fourth string. I assume the higher strings will provide less sound anyway (thinner diameter and less audible range of overtones than the lower ones). Yet I am even getting more sound out of strings 1 and 3 than 4. Any advice here? I should mention that my c.1980 Dekley does not have graduated rollers (i.e. they are all the same height) so there is some physical drop off moving from string 5 (.018)to 4 (.014), so perhaps that is also a contributing factor.

Thanks.

Dan
