I hate to hijack this and make it a Derby thread, but I bought two of them used in the last week. One of them was just shipped today. I played the first one out live tonight and it is the best playing, best sounding guitar I have ever played. The true tones in it don't hurt either. I am quickly forgetting about Zum's thanks to the Derby's!

Anybody selling their GFI will only regret it, and on down the road wish they still had it. It WILL be that "guitar I wish I hadn't sold."

Still working the road with mine on a daily basis, and still the best guitar for me! Image
Im sure if someone sales a guitar it does not really reflect on the guitar, but the owners personal choice...
If thats the case there have been alot of Push-Pulls sold here in the past year!

I know, I know... I'll probably end up a case of seller's remorse. I've regretted selling everything I've ever sold.... with the sole exception of the Maverick I started out on.
But for everything else that I've ever sold I kicked myself later on. Don't get me started on that 1976 lacquer woodneck Loafer that I got rid of.....

But for the GFI, I've got 2 other D10s that sound & play great, and they're the ones that get used. The GFI usually sits in the case. I sometimes take it out & play it a bit, but for the most part it sits idle & unused. That's why mine is for sale.
So there you go....

...& if I could afford it Skip's GFI would have a new home.
Though a satisfied Derby owner, (no fellers, no hijacking from me) for me GFI will always be a VERY close 2nd. They've got a unique tone that if I were in the fast lane again I know I'd need a GFI in my arsenal, no question.
And Skip, if you get session work I hope your not shooting yourself in the foot by selling that "voice". Though I'm pretty much out of that & can only afford a "default" steel which is the Derb, I had a GFI in the studio long enough to know it's unique as that nothing else sounds like it. But I don't have all the facts, & you gotta do what you gotta do.
But staying with the thread, maestro Mike Sigler's right; you'll see a flurry of one brand for sale from time to time. No coincidence.
IMO, GFI is a fantastic steel, period.

I've had my GFI a couple months and I still like it. If I can ever afford a second steel, I'd like to have a Derby, but I don't think I'll sell the GFI. Then again, who knows.

I remember at one time there were several Carter steels for sale at the same time. Likewise, someone posted a " What`s wrong with Carter ? " thread . I think because both are great modern steels, alot are sold. That`s likely the only reason you may see a few for sale concurently. We all like to re-circulate our steels. The hunt for the next one is often as much fun as playing it.

I'll be selling my pre-Ultra D-10 very soon. Just kinda waitin' for people to recover from the Christmas bills. Nice guitar, but since I got my Davis/Coop Shobud, I haven't even looked at the GFI!

Interesting, since my company has sold 32 GFIs in the month of December, we only have four on the floor and I'm screaming at this great company to get me more quickly.
The funny thing is that most GFIs I see used are selling for more than a new one is selling for.

Yes, I just saw one on go on E-bay for more than I sell new ones for.

I bought a new GFI from bobby,,great light guitar played in a few honky tonks,,smoke so thick i could hardly breath,,played great stayed in tune, and the verry easiest to make changes to, but i did sell it,i own a push pull, for the tone,,then i was looking for more tone from the guitar,,also along that stage of my playing,,every guitar i played sounded just about the same to me,,now i'm getting to the point where i can get a decent tone out of any good guitar, but not as good as big E or Bobby,,just my 2 cents,

I really like seeing the GFI threads. I've had my E9 Ultra for 2 years now and appreciate it more all the time. Whether setting it up and seeing how little tuning adjustment it needs, or changing strings quickly, or just playing it. As I gradually get modestly "better", I can hear the sound it is capable of also. I've found it a great beginner's guitar because of how easy it is to deal with. And listening to people like Mike Sigler I realize it is a guitar that will keep growing with someone and fit extensive use needs for any level player. When I'm ready for a D10 it will probably also be a GFI. In the hands of good players, all of the top brands sound great. GFI is a good choice though, and Gene's keyless system is fantastic. I envy anyone who picks up one of the used ones, especially if they get a bargain. I also have read that GFI goes out of their way supporting their used guitars purchased also. I wouldn't expect new guitar level support, but in many cases it sounds like players get it.

Last I heard, Buddy Charleton owns and plays two GFI's, and that should convince anyone who's heard him that it's a pretty good axe!

Many players here seem to think that their guitar, due to it's "tone", is somehow holding them back. That's like saying if you only had a Plymouth, you could drive like Richard Petty. (LOL!)

Once you have a good guitar (and most all of them today are pretty good), the main thing that holds you back is between the seat and the steel.

Need I elaborate further? Image

I am one of the fellas that bought one of the 4 GFIs for sale in recent days (the GFI is my first D10 - I've just had it a couple of hours!).... I drew the conclusion that I couldn't get more guitar for the money anywhere else, and I'm confident that it was a solid choice (more on this after I actually play it for more than an hour! ha) I am also lucky in that I have no aesthetic hang-ups...

Donny H., you have a way with words! Brands and models don't matter nearly as much as we'd like to think. We're all guilty at some point of being the proverbial "bad craftsman who blames his tools".

Happy pickin' in '06 everyone,
Nathan

After 45 years of playing 6 string guitar I bought a 60's Fender 800 two weeks ago. (see photo if you want) http://www.armstrongproject.com/fender_steel.jpg

Boy do I wish I had done this about 44 years ago. Since San Antonio does not offer much in steel guitars I went to Dallas and visited the Carter factory in search of a modern guitar. In the end I decided on a GFI, especially after Bobbe Seymour promptly answered my emails and answered my stupid questions - I ordered a GFI Ultra SD-10 from Steel Guitar Nashville. What a nice guy and a first class business those folks run. I know that there are plenty of players using this guitar and the quality is there.

Also wanted to thank The Steel Guitar Forum for sending my magazines - got them in 2 days!
