Alex--assuming your guitar is a standard make, the tool is called a hex driver, a nut driver, and other stuff. The size is 3/16". Yes, you should be able to find one at a hardware store.
You can also get one at any of the steel supply dealers in the links above.
I know from experience that after you get one you will then find your lost one. It will be under something. If you have a cat then you will know who is responsible. You may kick it.

I believe that you can use a 3/16 inch nut driver.

I think everytime I've lost mine I end up finding it sticking out the end of the guitar from the last pedal I tuned.

I have a yellow plastic toolbox I keep in the trunk of my car. It's full of extra steel accessories such as tuning wrenches, cords, extra volume pedal, rods, and about anything I need to make any repairs on a Carter. I've had to go there to find a tuning wrench before.

This 12 inch Crescent wrench is awkward to use. For the Carter you need a thin walled nut driver, there is not much room between the tuning nuts and the opening in the end plate.

Drill a hole through the shaft of the nylon~tuner wrench and hang it by a string over a tuning-key. Then pack it with your picks and tone~bar in a Lg. Tom~Thumb Pouch.

Not if you keep looking even after you've found it.

A 3/16" nut driver from Sears works too.

I use one of them zipper bank bags for my picks & tools, it fits nicely overtop the volume pedal in the pac-a-seat. (Heaven knows it'll never be needed for $$$.)

Anybody else use 2 halves of one of them spring type clothespins to hold the ferrule on the pin whilst restringing? I found it works marvelous as a neat little wedge. I keep about six of them halves in the bag plus a pair of needlenose to fish the old string end out of the changer after three goes "Thwang...".<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 26 November 2005 at 08:50 AM.]</p></FONT>
