From what I can find out the ultra hasn't been on the GFI's for too long even the professional models. When did the ultra come into being?
Thanks

Gene Fields went to Blackie Taylor after building the student model GFIs then Blackie encouraged him to build more steels. With the encouragement and help from Blackie, Gene built the first pro model GFI steels, including the Ultra models. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10

The reason I'm asking is I'm looking at a couple GFI D10's but they are not the ultra models. Just tryin to find some info.

Guess I found my answers on GFI's website.
Ultras have a one piece keyhead, crossrod brackets, adjustable changer springs and improved knee levers.
The ultras were the only ones on their website besides the student model.
Wondering if the standard model is still made?

Though Sonny P. is right in that either Gene or Bobbe would know, one of the differences I'm aware of is that some of the linkages, like at the knee levers for example, are beefier on the Ultra, but honestly, what they called the "pro" model, standard model, whatever is a great guitar with a great sound. A GFI I tried out extensively was a 'standard' or 'pro' model. I know some of those earlier GFI D-10's had a GFI 1 (pickup) on E9 & GFI 2 on the C6. I'd suggest GFI 2's on both necks. Though you might like the GFI 1's, they're a little thin for my taste.
The 'standard' would be a GREAT buy, IMO.

Oh yeah, forgot: The answer is no, Gene doesn't make the 'standard' anymore.
Looks like you've listed the differences.
I still say the 'standard' is a happenin' guitar.

I have played both the Ultra and the pre-ultra D-10's, both are great, Ultras sound great with the GFI II pickups, but I would be more than happy with one of Genes earlier guitars since they had excellent quality just as the Ultra models, & there Economy Models.

My older GFI has the Barcus Berry pickups. Sounds great. It will be for sale very soon, as I haven't touched it since I got my Davis/Coop ShoBud. JB

One other question. How much shorter are the GFI's compared to say a Sho-Bud.
