Any experience here on cherry wood? I'm looking at a nice home model (few pedals, looks nice, ShoBud pickup), built in cherry, with nice craftsmanship.
Just curious; can't find my old links on comparative densities, even after a search.
[This message was edited by Charlie McDonald on 11 July 2005 at 07:35 AM.]

Cherry's a little lighter and softer than maple, and it's grain is a little plainer. It's very easy to work with, though, and would probably make a decent guitar if the wood was old-growth, and well seasoned. On the plus side, it's a very stable wood, and doesn't warp or check as maple sometimes does.
CHARLIE, I HAVE A RESONATOR SQUARE NECK GUITAR THAT IS MADE OUT OF CHERRY, WITH A SPIDER BRIDGE AND LACQUER FINISH. THIS GUITAR WAS MADE IN HINTON W.VA. BY A FAMILY FRIEND...I BAUGHT IT STRICTLY ON THE WAY IT SOUNDED , COMPARED TO A LOT OF COMMERCIAL INSTRUMENTS....TO ME IT IS THE BEST SOUNDING
RESONATOR I HAVE FOUND. INCLUDING HOUND DOG, REGAL, DOBROW , BEARD, AND OURHERS OF LESS QUALIT.. AND MY OPINION IS THE WOOD. ALL CHERRY.......JENNINGS,,,U PK;;;;;;;;;
This is good to know.
The guitar is already built, and is very pretty. I would expect it to have a different sound. Nice to know that it's stable.
Thanks all.
Charlie,
I just finished building an 8 string laptop steel out of 50 year old rough sawn wild cherry that came out of a garage loft. This had some nice grain in it and I laminated two pieces together to get the thickness I wanted. I wound my own pick up bobbin and had Rick Aiello in Va. to make me a MRI magnet to go with it. I just got the strings on it today and it sounds terrific.
Charlie: I have a Diller S-12 that used cherry wood for the front & rear rails from the Greencastle Pa area, but used eastern hard rock maple for the top, oh, the neck is also the same cherry wood. The guitar is about 23 or 24 years old & plays & sounds very nice.
