Anyone prefer the baskets to 2-hole pullers

Post by Jon James »

I am planning on adding some pedals in addition to fixing some of the knee levers on my single sho-bud professional with the racks and barrels. I am going to be adding and replacing a lot of parts, and at this point I am heading in the direction of replacing the baskets with 2-hole puller bellcranks. It seems to me that the bellcranks are vastly superior to the baskets. Does anyone disagree, or at least think they are equal? Am I missing anything before I make the conversion?

I love the crossbars with two-hole pullers; pulling Barrel tuners, much better than racks pulling barrel tuners. The racks for the knees are not bad; but for the pedals I prefer crossbars.

Jon-I have had both and I agree with Ricky.

I have the barrel tuners with the 2 hole bellcranks on crossbars,I got some from John Coop and have them on my Pro 1....al Image

Hey Al or Farris,
Can you guys help me figure out which parts I need to order from John? I have a Professional 8x3 with the basket parts and I want to change to the crossbars with barrels behind 2 hole-pullers. I have John's catalog, trouble is I've never actually seen a Pro-II with the desired mechanism to know what all I'd need to get. Like to get this up to spec with 8x4, but I'll have to take a close look at the knee levers though as I understand the LKR is not factory.

Although I think the rack-and-barell system in itself is not bad, I find it still a bit rigid, although I´ve eliminated some friction by taking out all racks that don´t have any pulls on them. And then I think it just could have been built more precisely. I haven´t seen many of them, but mine (one of the early ones) looks as if the person who built it must have been drunk or stoned - the racks are not in a straight line but look as if they have been put in at random. It makes some of the rods hard to pass through. Though Ricky did a superb job getting it to play the way it does now, I believe that great sounding guitar could play better with more refined mechanics. I am not a fan of the conversion to nylon tuners, but two hole bellcranks with barrels using the precision parts that John Coop builds, sounds like a good idea, it might be worth it.

Regards, JH
