weii i'm comming up on my 3rd year mark as a steel guitar owner,,i've had about 30 lessons from some great players and teachers,,and have spent about $1000.00 on videos and tapes not to ,mention lessons and ect,,,you know i owe all i know to that,,but this week while hanging out with a great steel player friend,,he told me since i'm known as a good singer to use my ear to find and play the melody at lesat 2 or 3 different ways,,and this has opened up a whole new world,so for awhile at least i'm playing everything by ear,and because i play 1 or 2 gigs a week, mostly old country i have to do it anyway on stage,,it amazes me how one lick can fit so meany things,,but i do think tab and instruction is a must for a beginner,i just think it's time to use the ears and do it the old way like most of the great players learned,,,,,sorry for rambling,,,

willie, I detected no rambling. I have always relied on my ear in learning. those darn Tabs just mix me up because I cant hear the melody.
when I put a melody in my head I am using my ear. it allows me to find those notes and the best note combinations .
I learn much more about the relationships up and down the fret board and better, apply that to other songs, licks, fills etc.

some players are Tabbers. I 'm all ears.
[This message was edited by Randy Reeves on 07 June 2005 at 06:00 AM.]

Willie, I have found down through the years one lick can fit many different ways, depending how you pick it or use it in a song. Speed affects how a lick can sound. I play by ear and I try not to play the same thing twice in the same song. I have noticed many times when listening to a record the steel licks are the same if they play the same spots in a song. I have noticed this more with Sonny Garrish and I do not know why. With the legacy Garrish has I would say he knows what he is doing and that is good enough for me.

Just a thought; go to the Rebel site, year 1995 and Buddy Emmons intro to "A Way to Survive", you might try it in front of the song "I Love You Because". Buddy's stuff is hard to beat.
