Sho-Bud Tuning Question

Post by Jerry Malvern »

ShoBud LDG with them brass tuning barrels. Tune 3rd string open ( 436.5) tune b pedal down (438.5) Release pedal and its 442 open. I am guessing it is the stop on the b pedal, but before I turn every screw in sight I thought I would ask first. Thanks

If a careful look at the mechanism underneath doesn't show any binding anywhere- and- if there is some free-play in the pedal action before it is engaged (which is a must), check the roller on the nut to insure that it is free and not binding. If none of that helps- get ahold of Ricky Davis Image .

Jerry, I don't know much about Sho-Buds but one common problem with no returns to the right pitch is not enough travel in your pedal. Put your tuner on your guitar and start backing off on your raise pull rod for the 3rd string. If the pitch starts dropping as you back off then probably you don't have enough pedal travel. If this is the case, back off on the tuning nut until the pitch stops dropping and tune back to your open pitch that you are using with the keys. Tune your pedal back and then see if it comes back to pitch. If it still comes back to 442 or sharp loosen the tuning nut again unitil it the string stops dropping. Then adjust the pedal so that you have a little more travel than you now have.. Tune back up and see if this doesn't correct the problem. If this doesn't correct it, if you have a tortion spring or a pulling spring that pulls the lever that you hook your pedal rod to, back to a stop, check to see if it is pulling the lever back to the stop. The weight of the pedal could be causing some problem but I doubt it. At any rate the lever needs to come back against its stop. If this doesn't correct the problem, you may have some problems with the springs in the changer. If I remember correctly some of the Sho-Buds had two sets of springs on the changer and I have absolutely no idea how you would adjust these. Hope this helps you.

Hey Jerry; I've been away, sorry.
Anyway; those are all good suggestions and also assuming there is no binding anywhere and the finger is not already being pulled in the open position and you have enough travel to the pedal stop> I would say; tighten the lower spring on the 3rd string all the way(with the phillips screw). That will secure the lower section to the upmost and let the raise section move more free and quicker. Also if there is a raise spring on the finger(the little spring up against the body) and it's too tight; that will also inhibit the return; so you might try unhooking it from the bracket mounted to the body.
Start with the tightening of that lower spring first and go from there; and yell back if'n that don't work.

Thanks everyone, I think I found the problem. I disconnected the brass collar and the rod shot out of the end plate! Reconnected with about a 1/16 space between the collar and rod puller, retuned and it is fine. I do have a question, is that the right amount ( 1/16 ) of clearance?

Ah haaa....so the finger was engaged at the open note???? Good going; that is a good fix you did.
