vertical lever that flat 5 & 10

Post by Brian Henry »

If you pick strings 456 and apply the vertical lever that lowers your b's to b flat what chord do you get?

Willie

That pull will enable you to get that Brumley lick, but it isn't how he did it back then.

Pick 3 and 5 with your A pedal raised, slide down a fret - this time add the B pedal, go back up fret with no pedals, then, finally, down again raising just the B pedal. There it is - all on strings 3 and 5 with just the two pedals.

Somehow it sounds better if you do it the old way.....

PS: This is easily my third-favourite knee-lever, so I don't like it on the vertical; for me it has to be RKL - much easier with my little legs!

As for it's applications, they're almost endless, at least when going for more modern 'pop' changes. I know one can half-pedal the 'A' and get the same as the 'split', but the B lower will take the string all the way down below the 'zero' fret. Lots to be found with this pull and a 9, 6 & 5 string grip, too!

Tb,
Have you ever heard Buddy Emmons version of "This Cold War With You" from his Expedition E9th album ? He uses this change to go to the II chord in the chorus, just by engaging the lever on a wide voicing. It's beautiful. That's where I hear it most, is when someone wants to go from a I chord to a II.
Also, if you play an all pull guitar, or something that doesn't have the dominant raise on it, you can use it to turn your Major AB pedal chords into minor chords.
Hope this helps.

I like this change a lot, and got a lot of useful ideas from these threads and others - just do a search of the Pedal Steel area under "B-Bb" or "x-lever".</p>

No, Tom Brumley moved the bar down a fret while engaging the 2nd pedal to keep the note constant on the 3rd string. You can do it with that lever, though, if you're lazy. Image
