Hal Rugg's tuning string gauges

Post by Lyle Clary »

What gauge strings would I use if I decided to convert my C6th neck to Hal's e6th tuning?

Lyle-Good Question.I have been playing E6 for 50+ years.
In the last many years, I found that a set of E9 strings just about does it.

I use the 2nd string D# for my 4th string C# ,the 10 string B, I drop down to A for my 9th string.

The only one I add is a low guitar E for my 10th string. This is just like a C6 only 2 full tones higher.

A set of E9 strings has F#-D#-E-G#-B-G#-E-D-B. So I use 9 strings of a E9 Set.
I throw out the 7th string F#.
The 9th string D I use for my 8th string C#.

It all works good. With an E9 set you use them all except the 7th string F#.

The only string you have to buy extra is the low Guitar E, which is easily purchased anywhere.....al Image

Thanks Al. I am going to try this tuning. One of the reasons I never was much on c6th was the different fret positions than e9th. I think maybe by retuning it would give me and incentive to learn the back neck. Thanks again.

Does anyone know what Hal's current E6 setup is??? When Hal first started experimenting with it (over 20 years ago), he wrote it down for me, but I presume he has refined it since then. The original version had about 7 knee levers.

When I saw Hal play at Scotty's show in St. Louis, he played E9 and C6, not E6.
