Hum in a "crap trap" pickup?

Post by Mike Perlowin RIP »

I recently got a danny Shields "crap trap" pickup, and I love the way it sounds. It's lound and bright and has great presence. But it produces that same 60 cycle hum that a single coil does.

Has anybody else had this problem with their Crap Traps? Or is it possible that this particular one might be broken or defective? And if so, can it be fixed? and by whom?

Mike,
I have one, and don't recall any hum.
If it is mounted in a Sierra type case, you could pop it out and check the wiring.
You might first call Tom Baker at Sierra, as he probably has the most expierience with wiring these pickups.

Mike, I got one on my Remington.
It has a switch for the centre tap so I can switch it to single coil. When I use the double coil, there is no hum. When I use the single coil I can hear some hum...about the same amount as my single coil Emmons pickup.

I have two on my Fessenden, and they have no hum. They are great sounding pickups.

Make sure you ground the pickup to the strings.
