Bandleader/frontman/singer dude gets rambunctious from time to time. He recently had hand surgery and can't strum his acoustic so he looks to keep himself busy other ways. He picked up his entire mic stand late the other night and was swinging it, bottom weight-end first, WAY too close to my steel. I stopped playing and grabbed on to the mic stand and just held it arms-length away from my guitar until he calmed down.
That has nothing to do with the fact that I just quit the band. Or does it?

Hold the bar firmly in your left hand, and strike firmly in the lower kidney area of the dancer/drunk... very effective.

At the church gig the preacher's daughter has her butt in my face and I manage to struggle through...
somehow...
And then there's the open mic; I always put the guys on the far mic and the others on the mic in front of me, DIRECTLY in front of me. Unless of course it's one who needs 'extra' room, then I put her in front of the drummer because, well, you know how drummers are!

Be carefull about covering your steel when someone's sitting in. I had a woman jump up on mine, guess she thought it was a table or something. Got real mad at me when I moved her.

You guys crack me up! No pun intended...
I used to think it was vain of me and I just wanted to be seen, but I really get a bad attitude when the one in front of me is wide enough to cast a shadow from every light in the building. I get even more nervous when they feed us before we perform. Gary, I think that is the best time to get out the fan.

Sevell,
You mentioned you have to remind people your steel is not a table. I once had a guy dance by and sit a ham sandwich on my Emmons. Right in front of the pickups on the E9. I'm usually pretty laid back, but the band said the look on my face was priceless. I threw it back at him when he came around the dance floor again and told him it was not a table.

Savell, forget the fan, you're a gonner with a casted shadow. Maybe a 5 ton a/c unit might help as long as there is room to stow it next to your pack-a-seat. True story, about 18 months ago the band I was with thought we would look better with the lead, bass guitar and both vocalist placed on the front line The steel player (me) and the drummer should set up in the background. The drummer really doesn't have a choice but I do. I gave 2 weeks notice. Playing on a local level is a hobby to me, to be enjoyed out on the front line. I realize the steel can't be swung around like a 6 string guitar or the electric bass, and I don't have a figure that remotely resembles the female vocalist. Butt, I mean but, after 5 years her rear is similar to like being married, not to mentioned an occasional visit from my wife making sure my eyes don't wonder. Anyway, they couldn't find a replacement back then and I remained with head of the line privileges up unto a couple of months ago. This band has a new steel man and guess where he is sitting.
