Jerry Kennedy played the fretted dobro on Tom T Hall's records...a great sound!

Jerry also played the dobro on"Harper Valley PTA"...written by...Tom T Hall.

A couple of excerpts:

"Some lady, who was working with the producer, Shelby Singleton, came over and asked if they could change a line in the song.
'Which one?'
'We'd like to say socked it to the Harper Valley PTA instead of just saying she told them off.'
'Socked it to' was a popular expression at the time so I gave my permission to change the line. I remember that Shelby was using two sets of drums, something you don't see on a session every day. Jerry Kennedy was playing guitar, and he was really doing some super licks on the song."

"I recorded 'I Washed My Face In The Mountain Dew' for my first record. Back then, the pickers came in about five minutes before the session, talked about hunting and fishing, tuned up and then started picking whatever you told them to.

"There was Hargus 'Pig' Robbins on piano, Ray Eddington on guitar, Buddy Harman on drums, Bob Moore on bass, Charlie McCoy on harmonica, and Harold Bradley on a six-string bass that we called a 'tic-tac' bass. It was a tight band of the finest musicians in Nashville. The voices and the hot licks would be added later.

"Jerry Kennedy was leaned back in his chair telling stories about hockey, and once in a while he would hit the talk-back button and make some remark to one of the pickers about a lick or something."

A funny story about"HVPTA",related to me by Gordon Kennedy(son of Jerry)...

They were about to cut the song and Jerry asked Shelby Singleton"where do you want me to fill?"to which Shelby replied"come in after the fir
st verse...and stay in."

Jerry said"Stay in?"

"Yep"...

Jerry said that he didn't think it would sound good if he played that much in the song,so he started playing off the wall,crazy stuff,thinking they would erase it when they heard it...

...and that is the dobro track we hear on"HVPTA"...

Tom,IIRC that was a slide Dobro on that tune and was probably Pete Drake.
