Pro/Con: Raise #2 with #1

Post by Tom Gorr »

Another current topic has suggestions that the #2 raise be added on the same lever as the #1 raise - i.e. #2 is raised from D# to E while F# is raised to G#.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of this approach.

I understand that PF and Hughey both do this - and while that may be reason enough - I'd like to better understand the tradeoffs before I commit....

While I am not Paul or John, I do this as well, and I don't find and drawback to this at all. Perhaps I am not utilizing the 1st string pull in all the combinations I could - but I had it without the 2nd string, then with - and love it with both.

It's not really much of a commitment, add it , if you don't like it, get rid of it..

My first Carter only had the 1st string raise on RKL......my current Carter has both on the RKL..I love it.....

I find that after you add a powerhouse change like raising 1 + 2 together the opportunities and combo's open up dramatically.. the problem I have is with the other 8 strings ..

I have the 1 and 2 raise and there are a lot of purty chords usin these two strings plus string 3 and 5, and not only unison notes.you can make full scale runs with these combinations.

There are two very useful positions that use the first string F# to G without changing the second string. In C, they are at the 4th and 9th frets.

Paul has said on this Forum that his lever has a half stop on the first string before the second string kicks in. That's fine. But if you don't have the half stop, you lose those positions. So put this down in the "con" column.

b0b - I think I can get a "soft" half-stop just through how I set up the pulls. Thanks for pointing that out.
