Leg Adjustment

Post by Boo Bernstein »

I pulled out my P/P today and I'm having trouble adjusting the legs -- I can't get the release to move. Before I go at it with tools, does anyone have any advice for freeing those up? Thanks in advance. Boo

Soak it with WD40 overnight.

Would that also work for stiff pedal rods?

If you're talking about the knurled collar down near the floor/pedal bar, try giving it a few good whacks with a block of wood around its entire circumference. (Do this with the legs detached from the guitar, of course.) Or lay a piece of wood against the collar and whack that with a hammer. You could also try a few drops of Liquid Wrench around the part of the collar that contacts the large part of the leg and let that soak in before doing the whacking.

This might loosen up the crud that accumulates in those threads. When you do get it loose, take the whole thing apart and you'll see what I mean.

If that doesn't work you'll have to try two pair of Vise-Grips; or one pair of Vise-Grips and a bench vise. Just make sure you cushion the jaws with some leather or something to keep them from marring the metal of the leg or collar. (And don't tighten down so much that you deform the metal.)

I had to do the same thing on an old P/P.

The best method I have ever used to free stuck metal is to heat it with a torch. After you have the 2 pieces separated you can clean and lube. I would not use wd-40 on anything I wanted to keep. It collects dirt and gums up. A light grease or non-detergent 30w oil will work.
