Rajah bars - any good?

Post by Per Berner »

I've never had the chance to try a rajah bar, but I'm curious. How do they sound and feel compared to a steel bar, and how do they affect sustain? Should I get one? Opinions, please!

Feel really nice, not as slippery as a regular bar, less string noise, haven't noticed any sustain loss, but they are slightly more mellow sounding. They do get dinged very easily if you're not careful. The coating on the black ones is said to be harder than on the red ones. Nice bars, I use the red one all the time.

The ‘Black’ Red Rajah is called “The Phoenix” model. That's the way to go, with Red Rajah Tone-Bars. And very reasonably priced also! IMHO

I have used one for about two years now and I really like the smooth feeling and the almost non-existing string noise. I am really used to it now! Image

Kind Regards, Walter

Great bar! I use a 1" dia black phoenix and I find them to be very quiet on any type of strings, great sustain and the best part is, very easy to hold, never slips out of my hand.

I have one of the original black ones that is slightly tapered. It was included when I bought my late '30's-early '40's Rickenbacher "Panda" lap steel. Great bar. I'm very careful with it as it's old and fragile (the bar, that is. The Ricky is still a hoss!)

Keep on pickin'!

I have a 7/8th red rahjah
and a 7/8th to 3/4 tapered black phoneix,
I use them almost exclusively.

They are great for picking up off the strings.
and the tapered is really good for singe notes amoungs other ringing strings.

The 7/8th is good for getting one extra note with a slant.
but both have great liftability and little string noise.

Some where on another recent thread I did a un-scientific note decay time comparison with them and a few other bars.

They are up on e-bay every now and then.

i bought one about three years ago and is just as everyone on this forum is saying about this great bar. but i noticed that my red rajah bar started peelling or chipping after about a year of use. other than that i think is a great bar.
where can i get one of those "black" red rajah bars?

You can get both bars from Chuck Brattan in Texas.

chuckguitar@msn.com

And for $9.50 he will redo any older chipped bar.

They require extra care, but are great bars to playwith.

IMHO. They sound great. Quiet, and not slippery. The red bar will scratch the easiest. The black bar is very scratch resistant.

Hope this helps.
