Vance Terry/ Brisbane Bop

Post by Jay Jessup »

I came across my copy of the Joaquin records CD of the Vance Terry/Jimmie Rivers tunes from around '95 the other day. I had forgot how good this was, some great early pedal steel that still sounds current.
While giving it a listen I noticed that the booklet that came with it was improperly assembled such that I am missing pages 1, 2, 3, 4 and 21, 22, 23 and 24. It appears that Joaquin records no longer exists, would anyone have any thoughts on how I might obtain a correct copy of the booklet or failing that, would anyone be willing to scan those pages and e-mail them to me?
Thanks, Jay

Here's a tune from the album, Brisbane Bop.

More great guitar from this master of Jazzy Western Swing. The Steel player is Vance Terry.
Recorded at Club 23 in Brisbane, CA. in the early 1960's.

This pic from 1962, about when the 23 Club stuff was recorded.

What guitar is he playing? Doesn't look like his Bigsby (which had 4 pedals) or a Wright.

Looks like a Wright to me. My Dad built quite a few guitars for Vance

Here's a picture from the same shoot as you can tell by Vance's shirt & tie. Although the name is unintelligible on the name plate, I would say that after years of owning a Wright Custom from the same era, it's a Wright.

Looks like a young Gene Duncan doing the vocals..

I was looking for some Junior Barnard sides and found two sessions released over three LP's of Vance Terry cutting with Bob Wills (Remember Wills cut and recut the same songs so in the case of these 1955 sides - you almost have to find the LP's - I don't thinks these version are on CD).

Robert:

Some of those 1955 tracks were issued on this CD in the 1990s.

https://www.discogs.com/Bob-Wills-And-T ... se/5684158

But several of them were nearly impossible to come by for well over 30 years after they were recorded. There was another Vocalion LP from the 1960s called "San Antonio Rose" (Vocalion 73922) containing some of the songs from 1955, but for whatever reason it was always very, very difficult to find.

That LP contained "Hoopaw Rag". When I first met Vance in 1980, I showed him that LP and he nearly fainted as he had assumed it had never been issued at all--he hadn't heard it since the day he recorded it with the Wills band. In fact, I think he may have written it.

Robert,

All of the Wills recordings with Vance from the two sessions (January 24-25, 1955) are included in the same order you listed on Discs 4 and 5 of the Bear Family boxed set - Faded Love 1947-1973. It is big bucks - Amazon has it listed at $244.66, but it does include 13 CD's, 1 DVD, and a 136 page hardcover book. Definitely Bear Family quality. Vance's playing is really interesting, very transitional. On some of the songs he is getting a sound very similar to Bud Isaacs style. I also remember reading that his solo on Boston Fancy was one of Buddy Emmons' favorite steel recordings.

You might enjoy this rare live recording of Jimmie and Vance and the Cherokees playing Speedy and Jimmy Bryant's "The Night Rider."

I have a copy of Vance's pedal set up when he was working in Cal. Nineteen pedals and one knee. Talk about confusing to the normal Picker ! ! !

In Oct of 1960 after attending a Gretsch Guitar presentation of Chet Atkin with Junior Husky at the St Francis Hotel in San Francisco, Gene Breeden, Norm Hamlet, Jerry Rowe and myself accompanied Vance to the club where Vance was playing in Brisbane and was treated to some incredible solo playing by Vance. He was quite a player, especially in that time period of the pedal steel making inroads into music. Sure would've been nice to have a camcorder in those days gone by forever.

Back in March 1997, the Radio Ranch Straight Shooters were doing a set at Demarco's 23 Club and I was setting up and picking around. There was an older gentleman standing in front and watching me. When I stopped, he introduced himself and it was Vance Terry. Whoa, now I have to play in front of one of my heroes. He was very fun to talk to and he autographed my guitar.

i met vance a couple years before he died, sadly.
we shared a stage at some outdoor festivals . he was quiet and shy and didn't seem to know what a legend he was. i was in awe of him. i later saw a slightly funnier side of him.

one day he asked me if i'd show him some modern e9 stuff and i just hemmed and hawed and said i didn't know if i could help him. i was very intimidated.
i wish i'd had more confidence at the time.
the circumstanes of his death were very sad.

Chris, Tiny's solos were frequently more exciting than anyone else on the bandstand, at least on the stuff i've heard.
