A Weissenborn Sitar? Hmmm

Post by Larry Carlson »

Ok.....I admit I am always snooping for something new to mess with but I have never seen anything like this.
No.......I am not buying one but I admit my brain did go "WOW" for a second. Then sanity moved in and took over.
Just thought I would share my odd little discovery and if anyone had any thoughts on it.
Kind of looks like I would be tuning it until next Saturday.....

I have stuff.
I try to make music with it.
Sometimes it works.
Sometimes it doesn't.
But I keep on trying.

Definitely cool enough to make you want one. Who woulda thunk?

Steel guitar is used throughout Indian classical music.
Van Shipley is a good gateway into that world. A quick YouTube search
Brings up countless videos.

Jeff,

Thanks for posting that url.
I honestly have never seen a Mohan Veena before let alone hear one being played.
But then again I just entered the lap steel world so I don't know just about everything.

Very fascinating and beautiful instrument.
However, tuning for me would be a day job...... :D

Debashish plays his own design called a Chaturunghi,I had the pleasure to spend some time with him last year, his skill is beyond belief, the Indian players technique is so advanced ,check out Hindustani lap steel.Harry Manx plays a Mohan Veena with a western feel. Cheers

Yes Debashish is really a master. Sorry about the poor spelling in my post. I do like how Harry fuses the styles. Seen him live several times and he does not disappoint in my view.

My friend Grant Wickland on Salt Spring Island, BC has added two different resonator veenas modelled on the Mohan Veena to his impressive selection of instruments. Check out his website:

http://wicklandinstruments.com

Harry Manx also lives on Salt Spring and has at least one of these instruments.

Jeff, yes that is a Grant Wickland instrument that Harry Manx plays. They live on the same island on the coast of British Columbia.
