Changes to C6th, 4th string half raise?

Post by John Orr »

Hello all,
I am contemplating changes to my C6th neck copedent, specifically adding A 4th string raise by a half tone, A to B flat. Because of other changes I am planning to make, "somethings got to give" that is, with a new knee lever installed, I am at the end of the line for copedent changes so I want this one to count.
Question: is this a useful addition?

Even though I don't play much c6, I do find this A to A# lever useful. It will give you a 7th in an open position.

Billy Phelps raises and lowers the A on C6. He says he can get some of the same phrasing as on E9.

Raise it a whole tone to B with a half stop at Bb. With the whole tone raise, you'll have many uses as a maj7th tone and still keep the Bb.

You may have this full tone raise with 4 & 8 on a floor pedal already, but by raising the 4th string by itself and leaving the 8th unaffected, you have another useful change.

My most used C6 knee lever is the 4th string A to Bb followed by the 3rd string C to B and then the 3rd string C to C#.

Here's a short tutorial I did on use of the C to C# change:

Gotta Have It !

That change, along with 3rd string drop, C to B, is considered Standard on C6th set ups.

Doug Jernigan seems to use it a lot with pedal 6 to get a m7 eg at the 9th fret get a Am7 with 4th raise and 6th lower on strings 4, 5, 6 and 7.
