How many Marrs retrofits out there?

Post by Guest »

I'm so happy with the Sho-Bud Professional that was done by Jeff Surratt and Duane Marrs that I'm really curious to know how many others out there have one of these great retrofits.

For those who don't know, Duane and Jeff will replace the changer system on any old Sho Bud Professional, Pro I, Pro II, or Pro III. They replace it with a brand new triple-raise/triple-lower system and set it up to your specifications. They also had the body completely refinished by A J Nelson. The result is something special.

I've got an old Baldwin-era Shobud that I'd love to have them do. But I think it's too old a style. It's an old C6th guitar with 5 pedals in the middle, and the undercarriage frame looks like it's a sand-casting. I wish they did these oldies! JB

Stephen, Wow, beautiful work, I have the LDG that has been mentioned in other posts that came from their shop,.. rope inlay, round front. Jeff Surratt did an outstanding job with the one that I have. He said that it was originally built for Lloyd. What tone and sustain. Of course the beautiful finish is by A.J. Nelson. I highly recommend Duane, Jeff, and A.J.'s work. What they can do for your Sho Bud is absolutely incredible.
Hey Duane & Jeff, you guys feel free to jump in here anytime and help with this.

What do they charge for a full restoration like that?

I won't speak for Duane and Jeff as far as price goes, but I think you're looking at around $1,500 for a D10 without refinishing. But it's best to get it straight from them -- http://www.marrsofmadison.com

Thanks to people like Stephen, we have been getting Sho-Bud's from all over the world. It's interesting to see Duane Marrs on so many inside labels, where he signed off on the work, or even built. He sent them out and now he is getting them back after all of these years. We continue to make improvements on every guitar. A double neck typically takes right at 100 hours, since we don't rush through them even though demand is higher than ever before. Our waiting list time has increased, but we put them in line and try to plow through as best we can. Refinishing buys us a little extra time and send those out ASAP. We let refin's cure properly before assembly starts and make parts until then. It is a real pleasure doing these guitars and can offer excellent service and parts if needed. Many thanks to all of our customers. Duane and Jeff

I have a LDG that went from unplayable to beautiful. It plays like a dream and sounds awesome, thanks to Jeff, Duane, and AJ Nelson.

You can see it on the Unofficial Sho~Bud web site. http://www.planet.eon.net/~gsimmons/shobud/month_last.html

When I got Tony's guitar it had an aluminum neck on it. Duane had installed one for someone years ago, but, couldn't recall who it belonged to. Tony wanted a wood neck. Luckily, we had one with "black diamond" inlay that had come out of Shot Jackson's barn. How cool is that? A.J. used his special green color for a brilliant shading. His just seem to keep their original appearance, when so many turn dark or fade. The new system gave this guitar a much improved sound, tuning and playability. It is gratifying to see our work being displayed on so many sites. We are glad we can accomodate most requests like the neck replacement back to original spects. Thanks, Jeff

Stephen O'Brien,

Yes, you certainly may use those photos on the House of Wood web site. I have some other really nice shots of the LDG and can e-mail them to you if you like.

I'd also like to tell everyone that Jeff's statement about "the new system giving the guitar a much improved sound, tuning and playability" is an understatement. My LDG literally would not stay in tune through one song. (The top of the guitar had a crack that ran from the neck's tailpiece to the endplate, and many other tuning related issues.) It was virtually unplayable when I took it to Jeff. Jeff brought this guitar back from the dead!

I can't say enough about how this guitar looks, plays, and sounds.

My Pro-II is a bit of a mutt underneith these days. Several different eras.
But the newest 2 knees are Duane's system.
So for 8+8 it's 6.25% Marrs now.
[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 21 February 2004 at 12:18 AM.]

I'll post them when it gets rebuilt, assuming that I can get them to do it. Haven't heard back yet.

Talked to Duane this morning, and I'll be sending it off as soon as I get the case packed and a list sent off and acknowledged. I'll have them refinish it, five knee levers with the stock pedal bar etc.

It's been sitting for 20 years, so another 6 months or so won't hurt anything.

Maybe instead of having the rattiest horn in town, I'll have the nicest one..
