6-string pedal steel

Post by Markku Koskinen »

I'm starting the pedal steel. Anyway I'd like to have a pedal steel that is close to a standard 6-string guitar, but mechanically more simple than pedal steel's lower/raiser -system. I have designed a construction to have the raiser or the lower, but not both - for every string. What do you recommend for basic tunig and what string to raise and what to lower? And - is there any sense to go on this way?

Ah a challenge! You didn't say if a string could have multiple raises, so I'll assume it can't.
<font face="monospace" size="3"><pre> k p1 p2 k
E +F
B +C#
G# +A
E +F
D -C#
B -A </pre></font>If you can put a half-stop on the F knee lever, to allow it to be raised further to F#, that would be good.

Thank you Jussi, Howard and especially Bobby. This Bobbys firs one seems to be something I'm looking for. Its quite near the open E, which is familiar to every guitar player.

A little bit of bob's tuning idea but with a twist on the pedals/levers.

<font face="monospace" size="3"><pre>

LKL P1 P2 RKR
E +F
B -Bb
G# -G
E +F
C# +D
B -Bb
</pre></font>

The changes might look weird but they all complement each other and have to be where they are for combinational reasons since all might be used at the same time.

<font face="monospace" size="3"><pre>
LKL P1 P2 P3 RKR
E +F
C +D
A +B
G -F#
E -Eb
C +C#
</pre></font>

More or less the same C6 rearranged for some special combinations.

I would only change b0bby's suggestion by lowering the E's on E9th instead of raising them. I could live with that on a S-6 or D-6 If I had to. In fact I believe it would be a great PSG for playing strictly Hawaiian type music.

More I think about it, the more I might just build one. Limiting to just raise or just lower on a given string, makes the changer very easy to build.

Thanks

I have an old 6 string Multi-Kord that I'd sometimes tune as such:
....p1....p2....p3....p4

G.........+G#
E................+F
C......................++D
A..++B...............++B
G.........-F#
E................-Eb

It's just an abreviated version of a Jimmy Day tuning. It's pretty good for blues and swing. <FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Fred Glave on 16 February 2004 at 02:45 PM.]</p></FONT><FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Fred Glave on 16 February 2004 at 02:49 PM.]</p></FONT>
