Good Find??

Post by Jim Dempsey »

I sent my treasured EMMONS S12 down to Bryan Adams to get to get an overhaul this morning.Being that i had no back-up steel,i set out to see if i could find one locally.I called a music store nearby and they said they had one.It was a Dekley S10 w/3-3,i was able to trade my Classic 30 amp for it.I played it through my Nash. 400 and sounded decent.Anyone familar with this steel?Anyway i'm gonna restring it tonight and use it till my Emmons is done.Good deal?

For the price of a Classic 30? I'd say you did great! Although a 3+3---is this a student model? That might be a different story. But Dekley's a good guitar. See the recent thread on the subject.

I am not sure if this is a student model or not.How do i find out?Is it because of only 3 knees that determines this or the quality of it?Anyway i am at the very early stages of learning the steel guitar. So i guess this will work for me now...-Jim

JIM... where do you GET these deals??.. First a push pull Emmons 12 string for $1200 now a Dekley for the price of a cheap Peavey amp.. That amp is worth MAYBE $300.. MAYBE... you absolutely STOLE that Dekley REGARDLESS if its a student model... I doubt it is,I don't think Dekley made a student guitar... most older guitars with 3+3 are pro models... You just OVER doubled your money.. the guy who made the deal has NO idea whats going on.. He did NOT know the value of that pedal steel .Just goes to show where the steel rates in the minds of some "professional" music dealers.. they don't even know it when its sitting on thier showroom floor...anyway Jim.. SUPER DEAL!!.. Think of it guys.. Two GOOD steel guitars for about $1500 this guy has scored. NOT BAD!!! bob

I had to buy mine over the internet, and I live just down the road from you. If I wasn't so happy with the one I bought from Bobby Boggs I'd have you find me one. By the way, where is Mr. Adams located? I'm new to this steel stuff, and figure it's just a matter of time before I bend or break something and need a good repair guy. Best of luck, and if you get back to NNM tell Ken I said hello.

There aren't many music stores in my area that have steels, let alone any even being on the showroom floor. Both of these were tucked away in the corner somewhere.Bob,you'll have to take a ride up here some weekend and we can go seek out some more deals.I really lucked out,now i just have to learn how to play them. Thanks for the reply--Jim

Dekley made both a semi-pro model and a student model, both with 3&3. The semi-pro was built on a pro body, but the aluminum was black anodized instead of polished, and had a double raise and double lower all-pull changer. The student model body was an aluminum extrusion covered with naugahyde-like material, had a wooden pedal bar, used bicycle spokes for tuning rods, and had a sinle finger pull-release changer.

I don't remember the retail price of the semi-pro, but the student model listed for $495 in the late 70's. Either way, I think you got a great deal! Image Image

Thanks Jim, - It looks like i got the semi-pro model. It sounds really good. It's throwing me off a little, with the E's on the right and the all-pull changer. Is there a special tuning key i need?I'm so use to the Emmons push-pull.--Jim

Jim S...

I've got a Dekley 3&3 that I've always thought of as a pro model. It's a triple raise double lower with polished aluminum so it doesn't fit your description of the semi-pro, & it's definitely not a student model. What do you think? BTW, its a great ax too.

George, all pro models had polished aluminum. When the Universal tuning started gaining popularity, we came out with the triple raise and double lower, and used up the older fingers in the semi-pro model. Thanks for the kind words! Image

Mr. Smith,

Thought you might enjoy this.

Recently there was an estate sale in my area. He was a steel player that used to play with my father years ago, so I went to see what he had. There were 3 steels.

Dekley S-12 6 pedals /4 levers - nice, looked like all it needed was new strings and a little tlc.

Fender sunburst steel - a 400? I don't know the older models, but it was stunningly beautiful.

Deep red EMCI S-10 3 pedals 3 levers (If I remember this right) This one looked new, case looked new also.

I had to play that afternoon, had very little time. I asked the auction people several times if they could get to those soon. An hour and a half later, I HAD to run to get to where my group was playing, couldn't wait any longer. I didn't have anyone else there to bid for me.

That night I called the family to see if the steels sold, they had. $100.00 each.
