Steel Players in Branson
I'm going to be in Branson, Missouri (not picking...just on vacation)in mid-February. Surely there are some super-pickers there...and I'd like to see them as many as possible.
I'm not all that interested in seeing the big production shows. What is the best way to see the steel players? Back-street bars or hideaways smokey lounges...away from the big productions?
Who's there. Anybody have some names of players and where they're playing?
This is my first trip there, so I need help to get the most out of it.
Thanks,
bUd

If the Brumley Family Show is still running, you gotta see it - Tom B. on stage is a real treat!
The Grand Ladies of the GOO Show (depends on who is around, Jean Shepard, Margo Smith, Helen Cornelius, Jeannie Seely) - good show!
Mel Tillis Show (Terry Bethel, although he's not getting too much space)
I'm sure you will have a great time!!!

See if you can find a fellow by the name of Gean Movanie..(Not sure if I am correct on the spelling of his last name). When I played in Branson, (1997-98) he was playing for "Boxcar Willy" and Ferlin Husky. Also, a steel player by the name of Bob that lives in Kirbyville, MO. He lived about 3 miles from where my wife and I lived. He played for the Theatre that is right down the street from that Japanezz Fiddle player. There were about 9 or so steel players that was working at that time. There was only ONE place to "Catch" any pickers, and that was "Beverlys" out on the 284, (Or whatever the #) By-pass. Wednesday nights was the time for the "All-Out_Jam" session. I'm sure things have changed by now....Good Luck.

If he's in town be sure to see Roy Clark with my very good friend Bob Hempker. Probably the best steel picker in Branson.Mo. Also, Terry is not playing for Mel anymore. In fact Mel doesn't have a theater there anymore. Terry is building guitars again. I'm sure you won't be disappointed no matter what show you take in. They're all good. Have fun. Whip

Quite honestly february is a bad time to go. shows are just getting started with rehearsals. Terry played last year at a show but ican't remember the guy's name Paul somebody. Gene Mulvaney, who is a super talent, was working at "country tonight" also dean holman is another but they all may be hard to find this time of year. You might try a little club called beverly's. it's been a couple of years but on wednesday nights usually had a great jam session there and no tellin who would show up.My buddy winston blair used to play in a club next to a sushi bar/ restaurant type place. Like i said everyone is just gearing up in february. I play at lee mace's ozark opry and we don't start back up till the last saturday i april. Now if you want ot make the drive, about 2&1/2 hours i play on sunday nights at a place called crickets in hurricane deck MO. I work with Jimmy and starla queen, hosts of the hall of fame show at ISGC.Jimmy is also one of the staff drummers at ISGC along with bobby regot. also john farrel of ISGC fame works there too. we play from 6-10 every sunday.email me if you need directions but like i said it is a little bit of a jump from branson.
we're all just getting our sealegs in early february. branson kicks in gear actually in march i believe. wish i could help more.

Terry is playing for the Paul Harris show. Paul is a traditional country fan and he features Terry a lot. We were there 2 times earlier this year and he does some great instrumentals. Another good steeler plays at Country tonight, but he does not get much shine time. I talked with him a while last spring but I forgot his name. The steel player at Grand Country Jubilee is also very good and it is an excellant show. It is in the Grand Country Theatre. If you have time drop down to Eureka Springs and see Eddie Snow at Ozark Mountain Hoedown. Joey Riley does more comedy than steelin but he is good at what he does.

You gotta go see the Paul Harris show with Terry on steel. They let him play a lot. He actually runs the band.
Also, go see Down Home Country with Splinter Middleton in the 76 mall, I think it's like a 1 p.m. show and it is great. His steel player is normally Dean Holman. they actually do some traditional country like we do.
You just have to go see Gilley and Joey Riley, he'll bust you up with laughter and is a great player also.
Regina and I go to Branson about 3 times a year. I'd live there if I were retired. MAYBE ONE DAY!!!!!!!
Have fun
