Fender Steel Question

Post by Bill Hatcher »

On the Fender cam style guitars--400,800,2000 etc. Does it take more cam/finger travel to lower a note than to raise one.

I have added some knees to an old 400 and there is just too much knee movement to lower than to raise. Might have to move a lower to a pedal.

Anybody have an old 800 or 2000 Fender to get rid of. Double raise/lower changer. Looking for a good player, physical condition not important.

The Fender changer has a very short and quick motion, probably more so than any other pedal guitar. If the throw on your knee levers is too long, there's a design problem in the leverages (pulling point/fulcrum). It's usually easily corrected. Any lever design worth it's salt has some adjustment capability built in, but some people use standard rod guitar "cross-rod" parts to add knee levers, resulting in improper ratios.

All you need to fix the problem is more distance between the pulling point and the fulcrum, or pivot point.

Thanks Donny. I fixed it by substituting solid stainless steel wire for the cable. This got rid of all the "slop" and reduced the knee movement quite a bit.

Close it down.

I always thought: to be a good player your physical condition IS important. Image
