Jay Dee Maness "Get Inside" video

Even though it's been discussed here before, I'm compelled to start a new thread. I just got through watching Jay Dee's "Get Inside" video, produced by Kevin Ryan and hosted by Jim Palenscar and of course, Jay Dee.

What a great collection of solos and licks! Even an old dog like me can learn new tricks from this thing. I would say that it is for the intermediate to advanced player. But if you're up to this skill level, it is an essential resource for learning the style of this great Hall of Fame player. In fact, even if you're a beginner, you should get this video/tab book package in anticipation of getting to the level where it's value to you will become important.

My congratulations to my old California compadre, not only for his induction into the SGHOF, but also for this wonderful piece of steel guitar instruction. A great part of his legacy, IMHO.

Ditto to what Herb said. High quality production and great licks. Some easy, some average, and some challenging. Something for everyone. Is there a mis-print on his copedent or does he really have the LKL lowereing the E's? Seems really awkward to roll inward on the B pedal and have to go outward on the knee lever. Maybe that is why he sounds so great, he is just not built like a normal human being. Jay Dee's setup is one of a kind. Pedals are Emmons setup and the knee levers are Day and it takes someone special to play that way and he would tell you It works for him.

At ISGC a couple of weeks ago, I was sitting in the MSA room as David Wright played Jay Dee Maness' steel. Jay Dee was looking on. David was messing with this and that, listening to tone, finding the changes. He came to the LKL lowering the E's and reacted. Jay Dee said, "I've just gotten used to playing it that way," and then said something about twisting his foot a bit.

I know my knees aren't that strong.

About a year and a half ago,I told JayDee
I'd see him at a benifit that Eddy Drake had put together.Big mistake not to take my own horn because I could'nt even reach his levers. And yes, it's different alright ! What a picker he is.

I've taken Jay Dee's video and converted it to a chaptered DVD (40 chapters in all) for my own use. I can't sell it, I can't even give it away, (copyright stuff you know) you'd have to get it from him or make your own, but the neat part is that you can play a chapter (i.e. lick 7) over and over again in the DVD player and it doesn't wear out. You can set the player to autorepeat the chapter and it will replay the part repeatedly until you cancel and go to the next one. Great for us slow learners.

Works in both PC and TV-top DVD players too.

If enough of us have DVD players I'm sure Jay Dee might want my disk so he could duplicate it :>) I'm happy to give it to him, it came out beautifully. All I need to do now is put a main menu in the DVD build to provide menu icons that point to each chapter, else you gotta skip thru the chapters to get to the one you wanna see & repeat. Working on that now, others from the forum have been kind enough to send me some PSG graphics for use as the menu icon backdrop. Gotta do the icon(s) in Adobe Photoshop and that's a b****.

BTW, I gotta set my Dekley S-10 up for his 7th & 9th string stuff 'cause I dont wanna monkey with the Emmons.

BTW 2, congratulations Jay Dee on being inducted into the SGHOF. I just bought the Mel Bay Anthology of Pedal Steel Guitar book & CD. I wondered about the hair until I saw the copyright date was 1980 :>)[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 12 September 2003 at 03:37 PM.]

Just a short note to say that JayDee is pickin on the televised portion of the Opry tomorrow night with Vince's band. They are doing a tribute to Roy Acuff.

Saw Jay Dee's performance Saturday Night and it was perfect.

It must be a real thrill to have thousands of people anticipating those final 5 notes to come from the fingers of your right hand. By the sound of the applause they liked it too.

I've had the tape now for just about a year or so.

Oh?!, YEAH...............IT'S INCREDIBLE.

I like it when JD just sits there and talks -
music, philosophy, how this inpired him, how he was just messin' around, and all of a sudden - new riff/lick..............

I like the INSITE, sometimes, more than the music. It's all so great.

I'm a intermediate player and also own Get Inside.
It's a great video...fun just to watch and listen to or dig in and push myself.
I'm learnig a lot of new stuff. Into uncharted territory . I wish i could get a DVD of it. I have a Sam Bush DVD and it's so much easer to use..just pop to what ever song you want to work on in the menu and repeat etc.
If there's any way I can get one I would be greatful. Maybe you can work something out with the publisher. That must of been quite a bit of work to convert that.

I purchased at copy of it at ISGC, and it is one of the best things I've ever run across. Just as advertised, its a look into the thoughts of a great player.

Its kind of like when a magician reveals the secret of his trick...you say "Oh, that's how its done!" Pretty simple once you know the secret, but of course then comes the practice of getting it up to speed!

I'm anxious for the sequel...about five of them.
