I fail to see anything odd about using a practice board to improve right hand technique. Some of the famous players have used these and when at a seminar given by legendary and world renowned pedal steel teacher, Jeff Newman, he encouraged us to use one. In fact he even sells them. I believe that his are made from Tennessee cedar. Sometimes downright ignorance inspires us to define something as odd, when in fact we are selves are at odds with reality.

Some people just can't throw their trash into the waste recepticle. They either put it on Ebay or have a garage sale.

The seller made his point rather clearly. There is "no rest of it." It is designed to sit on your lap when you are sitting in yopur automobile in traffic, or on an airplane. For easy reference here is the seller's explanation.

"What you are bidding on is a small 12" x 3 1/2" x 1/2" practice board to warm up your right hand or to do practice exercises. It is made from solid red oak, has 6 strings, comes with chrome tuners and even has a mini fretboard. The idea came from a trucker friend of mine who is also an excellent steel guitarist. When he is not playing his steel guitar he has one of these on his lap giving his right hand a workout.
I WANT TO EMPHASISZE THAT THIS IS NOT AN INSTRUMENT, AND IT IS NOT FOR PLAYING A TUNE. YES! IT DOES HAVE TUNERS AND A FRETBOARD, BUT IT IS NOTHING MORE THAN A DEVICE TO GIVE YOUR RIGHT HAND A WORKOUT."

Enough said!!

Basically you tighten the strings until they are firm and then adopt the right hand position with the heel of your hand laying across the strings. Then you pick some exercises with your fingers. The only sound you should get is a muting sound of the strings being picked. I have tried this and it has improved my right hand technique, especially for speedpicking.
