Anybody with Gotoh's on their PP?

Instruments, mechanical issues, copedents, techniques, etc.

Anybody with Gotoh's on their PP?

Post by John Lacey »

I'm unhappy with my Ping's that end-mount the string and have been asking opinions of the Gotoh replacement tuners for Kluson's. Has anybody tried them and if so, give us a brief report? Did you have you buy them from the store like 6-stringers, in 3 at a time lots?

The Gotohs fit the Push Pull Keyhead. All you need to do is slightly enlarge the screw holes on the Gotohs (not the neck) so that the 4-40 machine screws will fit through. You MAY need to file down the fancy end trim of the roller nut side of the tuners for strings 2 - 9 so that the tuners will fit in their milled flat stations on the keyhead. A few swipes of a mill bastard file will remove enough of those two points to make the tuners fit.
If you need some 4-40 screws, I bought a 100 and have only used 40.
You can buy the Gotoh sets in 3/3.

Mike Cass put them on both necks of my 75PP when he did the restoration last year. They work fine and I've had no problems with them.

I just put a set on my 71 and I like them a lot better than the Klusons! They turn easier and have a smoother feel. International Luthiers Supply has them for $17.95 a set (you need 4 sets). Part number GG323 You can reach International Luthiers Supply at 918-835-4181.

Take Care

I believe they have a higher gear ratio than the original Klusons, which should make it easier in tuning.

Thanks, guys. I'll ask my favorite music store about them today.
