Nashville 112 loud whine

Post by Jim Saunders »

My NV112 just developed a loud whine. I went through the process of removing items from the line and it continues without anything plugged in, just the amp.
It sounds like the feedback whine. Ideas?

Amp Whine

Post by Jim Saunders »

Scott, I cleaned the jacks with silicone spray and q-tips and it worked! Thanks. It saved me a trip to the tech. Love this Forum.

Wow. Glad that worked Jim. Sounds like a good preventive maintenance for all of us to do. :D

Amp whine

Post by Jim Saunders »

Well, it worked for awhile, but now it's back. A loud whine, like feedback. Tomorrow I'm going to pull the head and clean the jacks good and inspect for problems, with my untrained eyes.

Suggestions?

You say you used a "silicone spray"? That sounds like a lube, not a contact cleaner. I'd advise using CAIG DeOxIt D5. You can get it at Radio Shack.
Best regards,

Even alcohol would be better that silicone which is a good insulator. Vodka would probably work, as it stops me from whining!

try tilting your amp back halfway and see if it makes the whine stop. some pv reverbs have done this.
turn reverb off and see if it changes.

NV112 Feedback

Post by Jeff Campbell »

Mine worked great about 2 or 3 years and started doing the feedback, sent it to PV they worked on it and it came back doing the samething. They got it again and put another tank in it with 3 springs and it still feeds back. My session 500 did the same thing and I isolated it with foam and made a thin wood cover to box it in, that did the trick on it!!

Whine

Post by Jim Saunders »

Yesterday I cleaned the input jacks with the chassis out of the cab, and, while I had it out I replaced the Fox chips with the stock chips and the whine is gone. I don't know which fixed it and I certainly don't want to denigrate the Fox chips. I cleaned the jacks with alcohol, not Vodka. I only have Scotch and I didn't want to waste it. Any part can go bad. Ken Fox is an amazing amp wizard. Yes, I also have the amp tilted back in a Peavey amp stand. Thanks to everyone who chimed in here. It is appreciated.

I know when I recently replaced the stock chips in my 112 with some modern amps, I didn't quite get one of them shoved in the socket properly, and the amp made some funny sounds until I discovered the leg that wasn't quite seated.

Maybe that was the problem and when you replaced your chips with the originals it just went away because they were seated better.

Whine

Post by Jim Saunders »

Michael, It is entirely possible that I had one of the chips in wrong. Those little legs are hard to see. Don't know. But, the chips had been working for months with no issue. I will probably go back in and reinstall them later.
