I'd pick a Sierra 12-14 string. I'm becoming more and more interested in extended tunings and seems like the sky would be the limit on one of these beasts. Plus it's probably be a tad lighter than the twin.

Having said that my "traditional" D-10 is ok weight wise & am very happy with it, if I really had to go lighter, it would be GFI. Tone's great (heard it), I like the looks, price is right. And yes, MUCH lighter.

My GFI S-12 weighs 59 lbs (in the case), and I've often reminded myself on those loooong walks through airports that it could be a lot worse. The new MSA is lighter, but my GFI is already paid for.

The Jade Green GFI on Bobby's site if I were going to do a D-10. (droooollllll) I received my new GFI SD-12 Ultra Keyless a couple of months ago and am very pleased myself at this point. LIGHT WEIGHT! Solidly built, easy to change the setup. Only thing I think I will do is try a Jerry Wallace Truetone singlecoil pup.

My Sho-Bud Pro-1 S-10 got to heavey so I bought a Williams S-12 Universal. Great steel. Light. Plays, looks, and sounds great, and you can get the lacquer finish for the same price as mica. They are some beautiful guitars too. Greg Zimmer has two of them.

Hey Everyone!----Saturday night I had the opertunity to hear six different pro players on six different steels. They were some of the most popular brands being played today. To my surprise, the GFI had the best tone of them all. I heard it on the GOO behind Charlie Pride.-----Eddie

New and modern?

You need to try the new MSA Millenium. If it got any lighter, you'd have to find an anchor to hold it down.

imho

Carter. Tommy White sold me on what a fine guitar, and fine sounding guitar it is. Light weight, good sounding, and priced right.

Don't rule out a universal 12...there lighter of course and it's not as scarey as one thinks to convert from a D-10 and still be able to play the swing stuff. I post universal tab on my web site if you're interested in seeing how it works...(scottyhenderson.com)I did just the opposite. I started on the uni-12 played it for eleven years and then went to a double ten. I switched because I wanted to diversify myself that much more. For good lightweight guitars I suggest carter and mullen.

On a budget: GFI S12U 8+8, black with candy-color blue trim.

Sky's the limit: MSA Millenium S12 U 8+8, black or red with chrome trim.

Alternates to consider as a second: Mullins, Williams, Zum, Fessenden, Excel; one of these in a dark natural lacquer finish.

You only have to carry it for 20 to 40 seconds, then you listen to it and play it all night. I won't sacrifice tone for thirty seconds of a slightly heavier guitar when I can also trade my 25 pound case for 9 pound case. This is a ridiculous question!
My loaded P-P d-10 weighs less in the case than any cuitar mentioned weighs in it's factory case. My case weighs 9 pounds, 14 years old and has flown airlines all over the world. NINE POUNDS! What does your case weigh?

Give up a great guitar to save 5 lbs?
I don't think so buckeroos. I don't care how old and weak I get. Things get to bad, I'll marry another 20 year old girl!!

Fiberboard, like drum cases? Looked like a couple of trap cases to me when I saw them, back when Hector was a pup.
Ok, ok, I drifted. Sorry.
I still say GFI.
[This message was edited by Rex Thomas on 09 June 2003 at 09:48 AM.]

...Bobbe, I just popped in on a break from my forum sabatical, off on a quest for one of those 20-year-olds...I've had dozens of offers, too, but I also decided to hold out for a girl...

...and while I'm here, what about those light weight cases? One or two piece?..and flying them in your own plane doesn't count..

..oh, and to keep it on topic, if I had one of those light weight cases, I'd put my p/p in it...and if I could afford a second guitar, GFI sounds interesting...
[This message was edited by Pat Burns on 09 June 2003 at 09:45 AM.]

GFI does seem to have a following here,so due to my unpredictabe expences with buying a house I`m trading my `74 Emmons for a GFI but there is no doubt in my mind that I WILL buy another p/p Emmons as soon as I recover financialy.Would I put my Emmons in the 9 pound case???Hmmm, don`t think so.I`ll rather sufer and cary a havier load then risk my guitar.I`m hoping to get one of Bobbe`s special push pulls, but they are up in $6000 so it will take a few months to get there. But I`ll get it adventualy.
