Zum Problem

Post by Tom Stolaski »

Any of you Zumsteelites ever have a problem with the high E to Eb not lowering all the way? My rig is 20 years old, and this is the first real major problem I have had. I tried moving the rod to a different slot. Any suggestions out there?

The two simplest solutions would be to A. Adjust the lever stop, or B.Change the string gauge. Try one of these first. Good Luck! ~~W.C.~~

Tom, if you are still having problems you can email me and I will try to help you. There are several possible causes, could be a broken string end caught in the changer or one of several simple things.

If you grab the lower finger with a pair of needlenose pliers and pull the finger back manually, will it go down to D#???????

Make sure you don't have a split tuning screw that stops the E from lowering.
Having the pull rod in the lowest hole on
the changer seems to be the best.

Is it trying to raise at the same time? If so, the solution is to back off the raise helper spring a little.

But since the you had no problem for the first 20 years, more likely there is something stuck in there such as the end of a broken string.

my 20 year old zum developed that problem a few years back and finally was solved by cleaning it. after years of honky tonk smoke and whiskey and outdoor gigs in wind and dirt and rain, the mechanisms just get grungy.

i might add...i still can't imagine a better choice of steels. i don't need a new one yet. sound, plays and looks great. maybe i'll change all the strings at once this year.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by chris ivey on 13 June 2003 at 04:27 PM.]</p></FONT>
