Advice on free - file compression/unzip program.

Post by David Rupert »

I need advice on a free - file compression/unzip program.

I know their is "Winrar," & "Winzip." Which would be the best, FREE...no tricks when installing?

I do a google search, but I'm not sure which URL to TRUST to my computer.

I have a Dellâ„¢ Inspiron, 64 bit, windows 7, monster of a machine. She's been great to me, so far!

7zip and Cam Unzip both work pretty good.

Neither WinRar, nor Winzip offer a free version anymore. Windows itself has a built in unzipping function, since XP.

If you want to buy Winzip, go to www.winzip.com. To learn about WinRar, go to http://www.rarlab.com/

WARNING: DO NOT GO TO WINRAR.COM. IT IS A MALWARE SERVING RIPOFF SITE, CAPITALIZING ON THE PROGRAM NAME WINRAR.

I was downloading several zip files at one time. The windows unzipper would pop up and do it's thing. Then all of a sudden, I would double click on the zip file, and nothing would happen. I had used both 7zip and cam unzipper in the past and they worked pretty good. I would like to get the windows unzipper to work again though. I used to use Winzip when they had a free version. Then they just offered a trial version, and you eventually had to buy the full version.

Richard & Wiz,

I tried downloading 7zip, which was also recommended by a girl @ Best Buy today.

When I started the download, I got a popup message from Norton Internet security, stating it had just blocked an intrusion. It said it successfully blocked it, but this really has me worried. I did a full Scan and nothing came up. Cool.

I will try the built-in program in Windows 7, I really want this on my computer...thanks again! Or one of the downloads on the Internet, without being cyber-attacked.
